WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A COMPOSER HAS A LITTLE TOO MUCH TIME ON HIS HANDS

Elgar had a profound sense of the ridiculous. When a friend moved to a British village named Potters Bar, Elgar speculated over “Who was Potter & why did he possess a Bar?” He suggested Potter had been a soap maker, but dismissed the idea since “he must necessarily have made more than one bar.” Potter might have been a composer, although of very limited scope to have only written one measure (or bar) of music. “Produce the bar,” Elgar said, “and we can judge its musical value.”

Elgar concluded, “I conceive Potter as a philosopher: high & serene musing on & clarifying problems far beyond human knowledge; I see him brought face to face with some impenetrable riddle before which the mighty intellect—even that of Potter—quailed, paled & failed. Surely this was Potter’s Bar.”
