“MA … MA … wait!” Klara hurried faster. “Ma … Ma … please!” Towanna stumbled to the ground, tears blinding him, but climbed quickly to his feet. Klara heaved a sigh and finally stopped. Towanna caught her in his arms, sobbing.

She fought back the pity that threatened to choke her. Cattle and horses. She clung to that thought. Cattle and horses wean their young.

“Please, Ma, you just cain’t up and leave us like this, you just cain’t ... don’t you love us at all? We love you. We done counted the days till you could come back. I prayed, Ma ... first time in my whole life ... I prayed to the Lord the night they took you away. I asked him not to take you from us, Ma, and now that He’s done let you get well ... you’re trying to leave us.... Oh, Mama, please don’t go.”

Towanna’s pleas shattered the night, begging her to turn from this thing she was about to do. Klara made no effort to stop him, nor did she try to comfort him. She remained aloof, for all that was good, yet be it evil, waited for her at the end of the turn row.

“Towanna.” Angus stood on the porch, the lamp at his feet glowing in the darkness. He sounded old and haggard, and oddly gentle. “Towanna, let her go. Come on back now.”

Klara stroked his face. “I love you … but comes a time … I have to go.” She broke free and ran.
