Chapter Fifteen

"Oh Stephen, look! She's doing it again! She's smiling!" Anne was lying on the bed between them, having woken long before dawn demanding to be fed. Stephen had gotten up to stoke the fire, and now he came back to join them, hoping for just another precious hour before needing to get up and start the day.

Anne was eleven weeks old. Just the night before, when Katrina had been cooing over her after swaddling her for the night, Anne had looked her right in the eyes and smiled, a real smile, for the first time. Katrina's mother had warned her that most babies' facial expressions were flatulence, no matter how angelic they might seem, but this morning, there was no doubt. Anne was looking into her eyes and smiling at her.

Stephen rolled to his side and raised his head to look down at his happy daughter, whose tummy was full, her linens clean, and whose eyes were struggling to stay open as she looked up at her parents. “She has your incredibly big eyes, doesn’t she? And they’re turning brown, just as your mother said they probably would. Good morning, my little angel. Can you smile for me, too, before you fall back asleep?"

It seemed that Anne's smile grew even bigger as her eyes met Stephen's. Katrina laughed in delight. "Look how she loves her papa!"

"How is it that I am lucky enough to have the two most beautiful ladies in all America right here with me in this bed?" He bent his head and kissed Anne's forehead and then leaned over and lightly kissed Katrina's lips.

"Oh Stephen, must you go?"

"Yes, Sweetheart. I'm sorry. The general is most anxious for me to check on the situation at Fort Ticonderoga, as messages have been so infrequent of late. And after the disturbances recently in Massachusetts, he grows more concerned. But you will be safe with your parents, and I will return as quickly as I can."

Katrina nodded and tried to look nonplussed, but her heart was heavy. Stephen had been absent so often since Anne’s birth, and the fear that something would happen to him never left her.

Stephen kissed her again, and this time their lips clung as the kiss deepened. He raised his head and looked questioningly at her, and she nodded quickly. He had waited patiently for what had seemed like forever after the baby’s birth, and although the first time had been painful, Katrina was overjoyed that they were at last intimate again.

Anne had fallen asleep, and Stephen very carefully lifted her and carried her to her cradle. He moved swiftly back to the bed, and Katrina reached up for him eagerly. He kissed her deeply and then pulled down her nightdress to kiss and lick her nipples.

"I love the little drops of milk after you've finished nursing her," he murmured, and Katrina blushed but arched her back in delight. She reached up and hungrily ran her hands up and down his back and then grasped his buttocks as she pushed herself up against his firmness.
