Chapter Fourteen

Ezra

We left the meeting, Isabella looking a little frazzled, and me with my cheeks stinging.

We’d worked together to deflect John Winter’s questions. But somewhere down the line in the boardroom, for reasons I couldn’t explain, I’d taken a bullet meant for Isabella. As I watched her gracefully walk down the corridor ahead of me, I couldn’t understand it.

I’ve always been business first, pleasure second. It’s what’s made my career so successful. Without that attitude, I’d have never gotten anywhere in life.

All of a sudden, Isabella, the cause of my pleasure, had made me compromise my business.

And it wasn’t exactly like I was getting much pleasure out of the situation right now.

The rest of the day passed in a series of meetings, visits to the test lab in the basement, and finally, a drive out into the desert where we watched robot-driven vehicles tussling with one another in the sand. It was exciting, but somehow all I could think about was Isabella.

She was gorgeous, that was for sure. As I looked at her red hair spilling from her shoulders, I thought about the sensuous curve of her back, and how I’d like to put my hand on it. I turned away to watch the demonstration.

After we were done, they drove us back into town and dropped us off at Amsco headquarters. I picked up my satchel, and then, suddenly, it was just the two of us, nervous on the sidewalk.

Suddenly, we became aware of the tension between us. Around others, we felt more settled and calmer, but together the strangeness of our situation came to the fore.

“I’d better go,” said Isabella. “I’ll take a cab back to the Palace Station.”

“You’re staying there too?” I said.

We said nothing but looked at one another.

“You mean,” said Isabella nervously, “you’re at the Palace Station too?”

“Uh-huh.”

“But,” she said, “I thought you would have preferred a better hotel, a fancier one, I mean …”

I shook my head. “I like The Palace.”

Isabella frowned and then looked into the middle distance. Finally, she drew herself up, feisty and confident. I saw behind her my car approaching and waved in acknowledgment. He pulled up next to us, and I opened the door for her.

“Please,” I said. “Let me take you back.”

Throughout the whole encounter, we’d been staring deep into one another’s eyes. I felt like I could get lost in her eyes. The eyes don’t lie, they say. Well, Isabella’s eyes looked frightened.

“Why did you stick up for me in there?” she asked me, once we’d started driving back to the hotel.

“Ah. That.”

“You could have just hung me out to dry.”

“Yeah. I guess I could have done that.”

“So why didn’t you?”

“Why would I?”

“Because…” she said, faltering. “Because you hate me, Ezra.”

I paused, shocked. Then I laughed, a long, slow, deep laugh.

“What’s so funny?”

“I don’t hate you, Isabella.”

“But I turned you down. And you just walked out.”

I looked away. I wasn’t happy to have lost her, not one bit. I’d done nothing but pump iron and work late for the last two weeks.
