Chapter 14

y life was decidedly calmer with Alice gone again, flitting off elsewhere to do… Whatever it was, she did. I genuinely had a hard time keeping up with her little pet projects and indulgences anymore. However, it did make my idle moments a bit idler than they’d been of late, and it was often said that idle hands are the devil’s playthings.

I used that as my justification for staring down at my phone at a social media feed. I despised such things, to be honest. The whole prospect of posting glamorized snapshots of your life for a distant parasocial public was absurd to me. But Alice had gotten into my head about certain things, and I did not do well with ambiguity. As such, this was not a breach of my personal code of conduct to be using social media.

This was… Research.

Even though I had completed my painting, I had not been able to put Nicole to the past as I’d anticipated. In fact, our incidental meeting at the RoCo gallery had just made things more complicated in my mind. The Nicole I’d been fond of and wanted back in my life was ephemeral, tangible only in brief moments—

But I’d seen her. Maybe.

Alice had made it abundantly clear that I had been operating in the dark on many things. So perhaps I needed to employ tactics that she would.

Nicole did not post much on social media. Which I found to be comforting, as it spoke of a similar alignment to my own feelings about these things. Her feed was a slim trickle and largely composed of her being in pictures at social events with other people.

What made things more complicated was seeing her latest picture.

It was a bit grainy from the dimly lit interior and a cheap cell phone camera, but she was clearly seated in an upper-class restaurant. That same little black dress was seen beneath a jacket, and leaning in beside her for the photo was—

Tyler Andress.

I conducted a brief staring contest with the photo before I locked my phone and growled out a sigh.

“... Shit,” I mumbled to no one in particular because there was no one here anymore since Alice scurried off.

They were seeing each other. That irritation flared back into life, running hot and taut in my stomach. She couldn’t see someone like that. If she already wasn’t choosing to give up her ambitions, binding herself to a person like that would. A milquetoast man with an ailing daughter would doom her from ever pursuing her proper path again.

I needed to get to the bottom of this and save her before she doomed herself.

Getting a hold of her was the more difficult matter. It was not as though we were ‘friends.’ After the last time I’d attempted to schedule a proper meeting, it had gone… Awry. And even though our meeting at the gallery hadn’t ended particularly poorly, I could hardly say that it went well enough that I could casually reach out to her.
