Chapter 22

The Investigator

NICO STIRRED THE pasta. His other pan was bubbling away, the tart, acidic smell of tomato combining with the familiar tang of garlic, provoking memories of his mother’s kitchen. He didn’t get to cook often—the family were content to use the dispenser to prepare most meals—but Nico liked the old ways and cooking enabled him to relax, freeing his mind from the day-to-day grind. He lifted the spoon to check how it tasted. There was a tug on his trouser. Looking down he saw Gino, staring up at him.

“Poon,” Gino said, pointing at the spoon.

“OK, but careful now, it’s still a little hot.” Nico scooped some more sauce out of the pan, giving it a quick blow before allowing Gino a taste.

Gino’s eyes lit up. “More.”

“Don’t go giving him too much, you’ll spoil his appetite.” Fran was in the living room. How she knew what he was up to he had no idea.

“A little spoonful won’t hurt,” Nico said.

“More, more,” Gino repeated, holding his mouth open ready.

“Sorry little man,” Nico said loudly while letting him have another spoonful, “you heard your mother. No more until dinner. Go and find Maria, she’s in the play-room.”

Nico smiled as Gino toddled off. That boy will break hearts one day, he thought. He picked up a colander ready to drain the pasta when Corey’s icon blinked into view. He stifled his annoyance and put down the colander. “Fran, can you come and take over, Corey needs to speak to me.”

Fran had that face when she walked into the cook zone. “Can’t they leave you alone just for one night?”

“You know I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t important.”

She snatched the spoon from his hand, nudging him aside with her hips. “That’s the problem, it’s always important.”

“Love you,” Nico said, kissing her on the cheek. He walked through the living area to his office and shut the door.

“Hey Corey, what’s up?”

“Mr Chowdhury wants to know where you’ve got to.”

Nico frowned. Was that all? “You know where I am. Nowhere. All leads from the footage have dried up, other than the charges we were able to pin on the boy. I’ve spent the last few days talking to Jennica’s friends and colleagues, trying to find out if there was another reason why she might have gone missing.”

“And?”

“Nothing. She had no enemies, no relationships as such. She was well liked at the university, a bit of a loner but no professional jealousies that I could find. I’ll keep trying but it looks like another dead end. I’ve one other line of enquiry to do with her work. It’s unlikely, but I just want to look into that a bit further.”

“I thought you said that you’d spoken to the university.”

“I’m not interested in the university. I’m interested in Re-Life. That was the company she was doing the research for.”

“Re-Life? That’s new.”

“It’s probably nothing, I’m just trying to tie up the loose ends.”

There was a pause before Corey spoke. “Can you just hold for a moment?”

Nico felt his annoyance grow.
