CHAPTER ELEVEN

PUTTING HER CLOTHES back on moments later, Carly felt her cheeks still flushed as she mostly avoided Oliver’s gaze, but sneaked several peeks in his direction.

She’d just been intimate with her best friend. The man she’d been in love with for so long. Really intimate. They’d gone from zero to a thousand in a matter of days. The last few weeks there had definitely been a new chemistry sizzling between them, something simmering just below the surface. A recently acknowledged attraction from him and the kiss in the bookstore had moved things forward, but now they’d taken a huge, giant leap, fueled only by hormones and passion and the sexual buildup of the last few weeks.

Her best friend had surpassed all expectations. His confidence and skill had surprised her. Not that she’d assumed Oliver was a bad lover, but he was usually so reserved and slightly grumpy; she hadn’t expected the complete transformation to sexy love god... Oh, man, she had to stop writing her Sealena stories before she started saying that shit out loud.

He’d driven her wild with his kisses, his touch, the way he’d made her orgasm... She was hot again just thinking about it.

But had they gone too far, too fast? In her mind, the physical connection was long overdue, as they’d had years of friendship to talk and share personal things, connect on other levels, and the whole thing had felt natural, felt right... But that day, things had definitely escalated. What did it mean? Had it been too impulsive? Did Oliver regret it now that the heat of passion was over? Worse, was this now just a physical thing—a friends with benefits situation? While that would be better than just friends, Carly wanted more, and for her, this transition had signified a move in that direction, but maybe Oliver was seeing things differently.

She had no idea what to say or do, so she was leaving it in his court as she slowly got dressed, taking her time with the buttons on her overalls.

She heard the sound of Oliver’s coveralls zipper, then the clearing of his throat... More throat clearing... Oh my God, Oliver, say something!

“So, um, that happened.”

She lifted her head to look at him. His face was flushed as well and his lips looked slightly swollen from their kisses. His hair was messed up and he looked sexier than she’d ever seen him. Her love for him had only grown through their intimacy. There was definitely some truth in the claim that once women had sex, they felt things even stronger, deeper... But she couldn’t tell him all that in response to what he’d just said, so she went with, “Yep.”

He nodded slowly, putting his hands in his pockets. “How are you feeling about it?”

They were going to debrief after their wild, impulsive passionate sex? She’d rather less talking and more touching, kissing... This gap between them now felt cold and slightly terrifying. The act had been amazing for her, but what if
