The second break found us reapplying the bug spray and getting food and water out for both us and the dogs. The dogs killed the first bowls quickly, so I refilled it until they’d both had enough. I didn’t think they’d be so thirsty after drinking half the creek dry earlier, but they were hot and working. I made sure to drink from the filtered water bottle, and then offered it to Cammie. She shook her head and patted her canteen.

“Fudge swirl snack pack!” I said as she handed one over.

“You’re weird. Hey, I was going to ask earlier, but what’s with you and that park ranger? You seem like you’re close,” Cammie asked in a curious tone.

“We went from enemies to friends,” I told her. “He was the building inspector in a town where I bought some acreage to camp on. Long story short, he was a jerk, and took a swing at me, and I had Opus take him down.”

Opus chuffed and rubbed his head on my leg, and I spared a hand for a moment to give him some ear scratches while Ophelia laid down impatiently, watching us.

“And you just became friends after that?” she asked, her tone making her doubts known.

“Actually no, that’s a long story.”

“A long story like how you were kidnapped?” Cammie asked.

I plopped down between the dogs. If we were going to take a break, I was going to sit for a few minutes. Cammie sat down across from me a few feet away, using a tree and her backpack as a backrest. Ophelia walked over to her and laid down at her side and licked her hand.

“Traitor,” I whispered to Ophelia, who just rolled onto her side so she could get belly scratches. “Yeah. So, Bern and Martin themselves got snagged by some tweakers. It was Martin’s hunting cabin they moved into. One of the guys was like a distant cousin or something, and he knew Martin wasn’t going to be using it, so they had it set up for cooking.

“What they didn’t know was that Martin was still going out there to check things out, and they snagged him. When Bern, who’s the local officer in our area, was looking, they took him too. I was snowed in with my pup and my wife when one of the guys there decided to break into my shed, so we knocked him out, tied him up, and I backtracked the guy who’d broken into my shed.

“I got the other guy to give up, and got Bern and Martin untied. The third guy Casey… I think? He went out into a storm to hunt, and hypothermia got him. It was pretty rough.”

“Holy shit. Are you like the world’s biggest shit magnet ever?” Cammie asked.

“Trust me, it gets worse,” I told her, “but that’s a story for another day. Any word from folks at the trail head?”

“No,” Cammie said. “I checked in while you were feeding the dogs. Everyone is anxious. Half the helicopter traffic you hear now is news stations and stuff.
