Chapter Nine
Stephanie King’s airplane landed just after dark, but no one knew that she was coming home and there was no one at the airport to meet her. She waited in the lower level of the terminal until her baggage arrived, and then walked out into the heat of the night. For a moment she stood there, sweat beading on her forehead, staring at the huge lights in the parking lot. A line of cabs was parked near the doors and one of the drivers looked at her expectantly.
She hesitated, then waved at the driver. He pulled forward, leaped from behind the wheel, and opened the trunk. After stashing her suitcase in the back, he opened the door for her and then climbed back behind the wheel.
“Where to?”
She gave him her address and then settled back. She didn’t think about watching out the rear window. She didn’t believe that anyone would bother following her because it was Tynan and the others that interested them. Everything she knew was known by dozens of others and much of it would soon be published in various professional journals.
On the plane from Washington, she had convinced herself that it was Tynan and his people who were the targets. Scientists in the hard fields, physicists and chemists and biologists might come to the attention of foreign nations and foreign intelligence agents, but archaeologists didn’t. What could an archaeologist do that would interest the Russians, unless she found the Arc of the Convenant or something like that? A city of Mayans, even if there was a fortune in gold there, somewhere, wouldn’t be that interesting. At least not interesting enough for there to be spies.
And on the flip side, if it were another university trying to get ahead on the research, they wouldn’t be interested in Tynan and his men, no matter what their training. The targeting, and the use of violence, made it very clear as to what was going on, and King didn’t feel a part of it.
She did, however, keep her eyes open, watching the route that the taxi driver took through the city. With so many people coming from out of town, more than one taxi driver had figured out the longest, most costly routes into any part of the city. But since she had given him an address in a residential section, he took the shortest route.
When they arrived, she handed him the money and then climbed out. The driver retrieved her suitcase and carried it up the walk to the front door. He left it there, happy with the additional buck tip. As the cab disappeared, she unlocked the security door for the apartment building. She walked up the stairs, bypassing the mail because she had her hands full.
At her front door, she set the suitcase down and pulled her keys out of her purse. When she tried to push the key into the lock, the door swung open with the contact. Light from the hallway bled into the apartment, but she could see nothing in the dark interior.
