Chapter Seven
For a moment no one spoke. It was as if the world had ceased to exist and everything was lost in a fine white mist not unlike that rising from the jungle around them. Nothing made any sense to him and he heard the words echoing in his head over and over again.
The Americans were moved a couple of hours before they got there.
A matter of hours. Maybe minutes. If they had seen the Americans being moved, they could have attacked then or they could have followed, taking the enemy when the time was right. If they had seen the Americans being moved, they would have had a dozen options available. Now it seemed like rescuing the Americans was an impossible task.
“We need airlift now,” said Callahan. “That’s the only way we can pull this off.”
“Shut up,” Tynan hissed, “and let me think.”
“We can’t waste time,” protested Callahan. “They’re getting away from us. Every second’s delay is letting them get farther away from us.”
“They’ve already gotten away from us,” snapped Tynan. “A couple of minutes one way or the other won’t make any difference.”
“Skipper.”
“Shut up. I need to think.”
Tynan turned so that he was facing the brown water of the sluggish river. It looked almost like chocolate milk flowing across an uneven floor. He forced his eyes from it and tried to concentrate.
He had some advantages. One was that the enemy didn’t know that the camp had been knocked over, so they wouldn’t be pushing it. At least, they wouldn’t get word of the attack for several hours, if they received it at all. They would have to move only at night and then would have to move slowly or they might give themselves away to American air power. Someone in the sky would spot them if they weren’t very careful. But they would feel no pressure of pursuit.
Tynan pulled his map out and checked it again. The jungle was thick all the way to the Cambodian border–perfect territory for Charlie. It would be hard for the Americans in helicopters or airplanes to spot him. But during the day he would have to worry about American patrols and search-and-destroy missions. That would slow him.
The terrain seemed to filter toward the border. There were numerous ridges and valleys between the camp and Cambodia. There was one river valley that cut through all that. If the Vietcong stayed near it to avoid having to climb a dozen or more ridges, Tynan could find them. The valley narrowed as it approached Cambodia, making the area that had to be searched much smaller. Tynan could leapfrog ahead of the Vietcong with their American prisoners and string out along the valley floor.
The plan was beginning to come together for him. He could see it in his mind as if it had been diagrammed on a map with blue arrows and red arrows. And then, in the distance, came the low rumble of the engine of the PBR.
Callahan interrupted his thoughts and said, “Boat’s on the way in.
