It hadn’t been dark all that long when Boone, Sterne, and Tynan crossed the tarmac that was still sun-warm, walking toward the C-130 parked there. When they got close, Tynan saw that the tail number was wrong and they altered their path, heading toward another Hercules.
“You sure you have everything we’re going to need?” asked Tynan.
“Yes, Skipper,” said Boone. “I checked the equipment containers, and the Army put in everything we requested. Their riggers got the pods set up and the chutes should open. You’ll have to trust us on this.”
“I trust you,” said Tynan. “It’s these Army guys I don’t trust.”
“Hey,” laughed Sterne, “the one guy was a master sergeant and a master rigger and said that he’d been doing this since World War II. Did it in Korea and in Vietnam too. I figure that the chute will open right up. And they let us look into the pods. Everything we wanted and told the general to get for us was in there. Everything.”
“You guys understand what I want.”
“Yes, Skipper,” said Boone. “We have the DZ marked on our maps and we’ll show it to the aircraft commander. He has been instructed to put us out where we want out. We collect the equipment pods and head to the road, keeping to the cover and wait for either you or Jones to show with transportation.” He sounded exasperated.
“Sorry,” said Tynan. “It’s just that this whole thing has been thrown together so quickly with so many people adding their two cents’ worth that I get a little worried about it.”
“Dan’l and I’ll have time to review all this on the plane, Skipper. We don’t go out until first light. We’ll check everything out one last time.”
A large blue van loomed out of the half light on the ramp area, speeding by them. It looked more like a bread truck than a crew bus, but Tynan knew the flight crew was in the back of it. It pulled up to one of the C-130s and stopped. The rear opened and the Air Force people boiled out the back.
They caught up to the van and one of the Air Force pilots asked, “You the guys we’re flying in?”
“Those two,” said Tynan, pointing toward Boone and Sterne, who stood near him.
“Climb aboard. Where’s your gear?” asked the loadmaster.
“Deuce and a half will be along in a couple of minutes with it. Somebody at the customs shop had to check it for drugs.”
“Yeah,” agreed the pilot, “we sure as hell don’t want to smuggle drugs into South America.”
The engine of the van revved a couple of times. Tynan stuck his head in the side door and looked at the driver. She was a two-striper dressed in fatigues, and it seemed that the tropical weather wasn’t bothering her.
“Can you give me a lift back toward the BOQ?”
“Yes, sir,” she said.
Tynan turned and said, “Good luck. I’ll see you tomorrow sometime before noon if everything goes as planned.”
“Aye aye, sir,” said Boone. “Tomorrow.”
Tynan climbed into the van and nodded.
