Chapter Seventeen

Coco

I couldn’t remember a time that I’d had more fun. The Amatos were such a warm, chatty, hilarious family. I hadn’t laughed this much in a long time. The food was passed around, there were more carbs on this table than my mother had made in my entire lifetime. Homemade lasagna and spaghetti and meatballs. And don’t even get me started on the garlic bread. I scooped a big pile of salad on my plate and passed it to Roman.

There was zero tension at this table. I’d never experienced a family meal that was this chill before. With all these family members here too. But they just talked and laughed and ate and drank.

“So, Coco. I know you got the boys that spread in Houston Vibe, what do you do there?” Isabella asked.

“I’m a stylist, so I style a lot of the shoots that we do. I also write a fashion column for them as well.”

“Oh my gosh. Do you write the Get It Right with Radcliff column?” Lael asked. Enzo’s wife was gorgeous, so it didn’t surprise me that she was interested in beauty and fashion. The girl had been dressed to the nines both times I’d seen her.

“Yes. That’s me.” I laughed.

“Shut the front freaking door. I love that column. Hey, that’s the reason I bought these boots.” Isabella held up her foot to show off her Doc Martens. The girl was oozing style. She had the good looks of her brother, with an edgy, cool, hip air about her.

“That was the first column I ever wrote.” I beamed. I’d interned at the magazine for two years, so I’d nagged my boss Stella about doing this column for a long time before she gave me the green light.

“Well, Coco, I could sure use some fashion tips. Maybe you could come shopping with me and my sisters and help us get with the times,” Celeste asked.

“It’s going to take more than one trip to the mall, baby,” her husband Billy teased, and she rolled her eyes as everyone chuckled.

“I think you all look great, and I’d be happy to shop with you anytime. Shopping is my favorite form of exercise,” I said, earning myself some more laughs even though it was true.

There was endless chatter and different side conversations going on while we ate. I loved how close they all were. The Radcliffs did not converse during dinner unless Whitney was having a tantrum. This was nice. Refreshing. Genuine.

When we finished up, we all carried our plates to the kitchen and piled them in the sink. Melissa got to work on loading them in the dishwasher, while Celeste and Gia pulled out two pies and a chocolate cake. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d eaten this well. I paused at the kids’ table and looked down to see the most beautiful drawing of a Brontosaurus on the paper placemat that Valentino was currently creating his art on. His cousins were deep in conversation about some girl at school who had gotten detention for bringing her cell phone to school and having it out in class.
