Chapter Eight
He was wrong. Miracles did happen. Not often, and they were almost non-existent in Kim’s Kingdom, but today was an exception. It started to snow. Not just any snow. Over the last few days, they’d experienced snowfalls ranging from light to heavy, but this was something else, beyond the experience of most men. It wasn’t just snow. Wind had picked up from the north, howling through the hills and mountains of North Korea, picking up powdery snow that had fallen in previous days and turning it into a thick, icy fog. Combined with the huge snowflakes falling in a deep concentration, the effect was to blot out all visibility beyond a few meters.
They clustered around him, standing in the open now, with no need to hide. The enemy disappeared, the mountains had disappeared, and the only question was finding the right direction. Choi fished in the pocket of his borrowed NK tunic and pulled out a primitive compass, all brass screws and heavy metal framing, like a relic of a punk rock era. He checked the needle, turned the bezel, and pointed.
“The border is that way.”
“We’re heading for the tunnel,” Nolan reminded him, “We don’t want to run into an NK guard tower.”
“As far as I can tell, this is the right direction. More or less.”
“Better make it more,” Ryder snapped, “I’ve had about a guts full of this country.”
Choi grimaced. “So has most of the population, including these soldiers who are coming with us.”
“Then they should make some changes.”
“Anyone who tries is shot or sent to a camp of hard labor. Most would prefer the bullet.”
He shrugged. “Their choice. Give me the compass and I’ll take point.”
He led the way through the blinding snowstorm, and they couldn’t tell if they were on a well-trodden track or in the middle of nowhere. The snow had drifted and obliterated all traces of what had been there before. Nolan was helping Lieutenant Baker to walk, and she was still shivering with the shock of what had happened to her. He could have got a couple of the soldiers to help, but he had the impression she wouldn’t be too pleased by the proximity of those distinctive uniforms.
The storm continued unabated, and his main concern was it would end before they made it back. It didn’t show any signs of easing, and they walked on, often knee deep in the snow, with every step taking them closer to the border. He thought about Jang, and if they made it across, it was still a score that remained to be settled.
Sure, we kicked his ass by freeing the prisoners, and interfered with his plans to furnish the Supreme Leader with details of the border defenses. But we don’t have the Colonel, so we can’t produce him to convince the ROKs of the threat to their security.
He turned to Choi, who was walking behind him and Eleanor.
“What do you think he’ll do next?”
“Who do you mean?”
“Jang.”
“I don’t know. I imagine he’ll stay with the
