Ron dove into the water several times to search for her. But she was gone. Now he sat on the deck catching his breath, staring at nothing. The realization that the search was done was setting in.
Teresaâs skin still tingled from the adrenaline, but she was coming back to herself. The panic attack ending. Sam, she realized, was sitting next to her, holding her. She lifted heavy eyes to her face and asked in a shaky voice what had happened.
Ronâs head came up, but Sam gave him a look that turned his head back to the deck. âRon and I were in the kitchen. He was searing one of the steaks, and I wasââ She frowned at the memory, her voice becoming thicker. âMegan came upstairs and just stood there. We both looked at her and she just, like, screamed. Then ran out here.â
âWe need to call this in,â Teresa said.
Ron was shaking his head. âWe both tried. Weâre not getting any signal for some reason.â He stopped, his lower lip starting to jump. âSheâs gone, isnât she?â His body tensed; his breath picked up. âFuck. No, no, no.â His wide eyes went to Sam, pleading.
âStop,â Sam said, sitting up straight. âThis isnât our fault. Something else happened. You heard her. Something was wrong with her.â
Teresa shook her head wildly. âWhy would you even think this was your fault? We canât do that to ourselves.â Her words felt like syrup in her mouth.
âJust get the motor going,â Sam said, her voice flat now. âWe have to get back.â
Ron looked frightened by the suggestion. âWe canât leave her. Sheâs here. We canât just leave her.â
Sam stood, walking over to him. She took his face in her hands and pointed it at hers. Teresa could hear tears and anger in her voice. âSheâs gone, Ron. Iâm sorry, but us going home is what happens next. Maybe if we fucking hurry, they can at least recover her body. Understand?â
As Ron got up, Teresa remembered the thing in the water. The sound. She opened her mouth to ask if they had heard it too but thought better of it. It had seemed so real and important when it was happening, but now she thought it might not have happened at all. At least not in the way she remembered. It didnât make sense. So much was going on. Maybe Ron or Sam bumped the horn. Or a stupid bird was flying over. Something. Anything. Even normal noises sounded so much different, more intenseâfrightening evenâwhen you were stressed. That, she decided, was probably it.
