JACE SAT ON THE BACK porch of Sarah’s house. Sarah sat across from him, though Brigid had long gone to bed. The warm summer breeze made the flames of the citronella candles flicker. The green glow of lightning bugs twinkled throughout the darkened backyard. A mosquito buzzed past Jace’s ear, and he swatted it away. There was an eerie calmness around them as if waiting for the storm, which wasn’t surprising considering they were hunting vampires, and vampires were hunting them.

Jace sat thinking about the music box. Brigid explained how it could be instrumental in bringing the vampires to them if they could not get to them during the daylight hours. The music box would entrance the vampire, allowing them to destroy it. Although it still carried with it some degree of danger. A stronger vampire could resist its magic. However, a lesser one could not. The same would go for killing the vampire in the day. If they were to happen upon the vampire while he slept, they could almost easily destroy it without consequence. However, a stronger vampire could wake and, even in his weakened state, would still be more powerful than a human. Either option was risky, considering the vampires they were currently up against. Not only were they old and strong, but one of them was powered by a demon.

Brigid believed it was one of these vampires that had killed his fiancée Cloe. Jace found it hard to believe that it would have been Harper or her friends, though it could have been someone from Luca’s crew or even Luca himself. But why would Luca have offered to help him if he were the one who had killed her? Although it wasn’t likely, Luca would be helping him now, and maybe he never intended to help him in the first place. It was possible Luca had no intention of holding up his end of the bargain, though Jace had a feeling Luca wasn’t the type to go back on his word. Otherwise, would he not have just killed Alex himself?

Jace’s thoughts went back to the music box, and he wondered what Sarah was thinking. Earlier, when Brigid told them about it, she said she knew where it was being kept. When she called the woman, who had been entrusted with it, Brigid was informed the box was missing. And not only was it missing, but someone had come by earlier that morning asking to purchase it.

The breeze, which had been steady all night, began to calm. The typical noises of the night began to quiet. Jace and Sarah both sat up straighter in their chairs. Neither said a word as they listened for movement of any kind. Jace turned his head from side to side, trying to get a glimpse of anything in the dark. It was then that a dark figure appeared at the edge of the porch steps, a figure he remembered as the apparition that appeared to him on the night that he summoned Alex.
