Chapter 7

Destin

Days later

“That’s one up!” I yelled to Bobby as he dribbled the ball down the court in my basement.

I’d called the boys to hang out before meeting Sadie for dinner. It was two on two with Sean and Adam against Bobby and me. Most of my friends were players on the team, and I kept in contact with a couple of guys from my old stomping ground.

“Time-out,” Adam said, pulling off his shirt and using it to wipe his face.

“You need to cover that bird's chest,” I taunted.

“Fuck you, Destin. Sadie loves it.” Adam kissed his right bicep, and the three of them laughed at my jealousy.

“Sadie finally agreed to go out with you?” Sean asked, pulling a bottle of water from his bag.

“Yeah.”

Adam smirked. “Have you smashed yet?”

I glared at him. “Don’t talk about her like that.”

“He’s officially in love,” Adam announced, holding his hand out to Bobby and Sean as they handed him money.

“You three motherfucker’s bet on me?”

“Hell, yeah.” Adam laughed.

“Fuck y’all. Ain’t nobody in love. She’s cool,” I said, running the ball through my legs.

“More than cool by the way you kept eyes on her at your charity a few days ago and in the locker room,” Bobby recalled.

“Who’s friend are you exactly?”

“I go where the money is,” Bobby teased.

“Can’t even count on my boys,” I huffed.

“Have you talked with your parents?” Bobby asked.

“Not yet. I plan on introducing her to them.”

Sean grabbed the ball from my hand and did a free throw. “At least you didn’t have to get married.”

“Hell, no. After six months, I’m back doing me.” I licked my lips, thinking of all the pussy I was ready to fall into.

“So Sadie’s up for grabs after six months?” Adam asked.

Adam pushing up on Sadie shouldn’t bother me much, but we’d had great conversations lately, and I considered her a friend.

“Destin, how do you not know how to play Spades?” Sadie joked over the phone.

“What are you trying to say? All black people should know how to play Spades?”

She cackled in the background. “As the so-called bad boy, I expected more from you.”

“Girl, I’m everything and the whole package.”

“Do women really fall for that?”

“The truth?”

“You and your truth better strap up before you’re on some talk show with five baby mommas and seven kids.”

“No baby momma’s over here.”

“That’s what your mouth says.”

“What does your mouth say?”

The phone went silent.

“Cat got your tongue?”

“I need to get back to my patient.”

“Who?”

“None of your business.”

“If it’s Oscar or George, I’m kicking their ass.”

“This is my job, Destin.”

“So?”

“Stop pouting,” Sadie giggled.

“Have a good day, Sadie.”

“You too, Destin.”

“See? He’s already daydreaming about the girl.” Sean said, pulling me from my thoughts.

“Come on. I’m gonna beat your ass in this game and get my five hundred.” I snatched the ball from Sean.

“Now we're talking.” Adam rubbed his hands together.

Two hours later, I emerged from the shower. I dried off, grabbed a pair of boxers, and tossed the towel into the hamper.

Playing ball like old times made me homesick and want to hang out with my parents.
