The impenetrable walls of clouds that rolled over the island of Barbaros seemed to muffle all sounds, and an unusually heavy chill frosted the air without the satisfaction of snow. Professor Humstrum had taken a break from his usual curriculum to instruct the students how to disassociate their spiritual bodies from the cold, although it wasn’t unusual to still see first years huddled inside their carts with a thick blanket thrown over the top. Professor Wilst admonished this and frequently pointed out that bundling up was worthless now that their bodies no longer generated heat. Some familiar habits were hard to break, however, and Noah could only feel sorry for those who couldn’t get over the fact that they were dead.

It wasn’t the weather that was making Noah feel deflated and alone though. Jamie had sworn she didn’t want to talk about what they’d seen in the mirror, but she was spending a lot of time working with Brandon now and Noah didn’t want to deal with him. Walter and Jamie still weren’t speaking, however. His residual bitterness seemed to overflow onto Noah, and he’d often complain how unfair it was that Jamie had forgiven Noah but not him. Their relationship was further strained as Noah had put his foot down about not helping Walter with his voodoo revenge, and the two of them could barely spend time together without snapping at one another.

It was all so stupid, but when Noah was being honest with himself, he knew that it was as much his own fault for not getting along with his friends. He was keeping his precognition of the demon attack secret from everyone, and it was eating him up inside. There was nothing he could do that wouldn’t result in him blaming himself for how it turned out. Noah desperately wanted to confide in his friends, but every time it felt like he had the chance to bring it up, he’d fumble the words and the opportunity would be lost. Part of him was even bitter that his friends didn’t try harder to get him to open up, although of course that was ridiculous because he was often the one being distant and cold.

The only person Noah was really getting along with was Elijah. He visited Noah frequently in the library to check on his progress with the mirror, and he was the only one who remained relentlessly positive about the future.

“Just think how marvelous it will be to have our very own shortcut to life,” Elijah said one day. He was lounging on top of one of the library tables beside Noah while he studied. Or rather on bottom, as they were hanging upside-down on the underside of a platform. All the right-side up tables were now occupied by students preparing for their midterm exams though, and upside-down was still better than the dark and frosty graveyard.

“No tests to pass, no fees to pay, no rules or schedules or dogmas to adhere to,” Elijah sighed, quite content to talk to himself.
