BREAKTHROUGH AND BREAKAWAY

“Whenever I think about music,” Schoenberg said, “I never visualize—consciously or subconsciously—any other than German music.”1

Given his sharp awareness of the largely negative attitudes of the Germanic nations of his day toward their Jewish minorities, Schoenberg’s fixation on and support for Teutonic dominance in music seems almost masochistic. “If one had a hint of common sense in Germany,” he wrote,

one would understand that the fight against me means more or less the intention to break down its hegemony in music. Because through me alone and through what I produced on my own, which has not been surpassed by any nation, the hegemony of German music is secured for at least this generation. But I am a Jew! Of course, what else should I be, since I want to give something, which [society] is unable to accept?2
