Twenty

When I finally looked at him, he was propped up on his elbow and looking down at me, eyebrows raised in surprise. “This is no dream, I’m glad to say. But how did you know it was me? Were you told? I can’t believe that you knew, and that was what I was going to tell you, and you knew.” His eyes widened as he realised the full implication of what I had told him. “I knew the same way that I checked who it was every time I had been booked for the night, hoping and praying that it was you. The nights that I spent with you were very special, you made me extremely happy.”

“But how did you know?” he asked again, pulling himself up to lean against the headboard and pulling me into his arms. “You used the same aftershave, didn’t you? Like you have today?” He smiled. “Yes, I did, hoping that you would recognise me.”

“I thought you did, but you have a small scar on your back. When I found that just now you have no idea how incredibly happy that made me feel, because I was desperately afraid that I wouldn’t see you again, and if I couldn’t have you in my life, I didn’t want anybody else. I had had enough of men. The only one I wanted was you. But I had been having this strange feeling about you because of the way you were asking to meet me. Wondering if you were the man I had fallen in love with, but I didn’t dare think about that too much. I would have been devastated if I was proved wrong. But I always felt that there was some sort of chemistry between us, and it was there when Anna introduced us. Did you feel it too?” He tightened his hold on me and didn’t say anything for a while. “I know, I felt it too, and it means so much to me that we both feel the same. You said you recognised me by a scar?” he mused, looking puzzled, and then he smiled as he remembered. “I got that falling out of a tree when I was a kid. It hurt like hell, bled a lot and needed stitches, fancy that. And the nights we spent together were special and made you happy?” That thrilled him. “I tried to make you as happy as I could, until you were rescued. But I remember you giving me a hell of a lot of pleasure too, it wasn’t just one way. So, I think that it was mutual, don’t you? I tried many times to rescue you, but they weren’t interested in letting you leave, and I was getting desperate. I think they were playing me off against another man who also wanted you. I dread to think what your life would have been like with him. He was a cruel man. You would have been earning him a large amount of money.
