Lucy met his gaze. His blunt words were cruel and hit their mark. ‘I do accept it, Charles, but that doesn’t mean I can forget him—or the fact that it was my own actions that brought about his brutal death.’ Drawing a deep breath, she stepped away from him, unwilling to discuss the matter further. ‘Tomorrow I shall return to Nandra. I shall not forget our time together.’

‘I sincerely hope not. I shall not forget it either and, whatever the future holds for you, Lucy, I sincerely wish only for your happiness.’

The attraction of his handsome face and deep blue eyes, which could be as stormy as India during a monsoon or warm with depths of tenderness, had been irresistible. Whenever they were together Lucy’s feelings had intensified until they brought an ache of emptiness to her heart. He did not love her—not that she expected him to, but his consideration as a lover had brought her to a pleasure that Johnathan had never achieved.

That night had held a thousand unexceptionable and unexpected pleasures for them both, but she would not allow herself to become caught up in a romantic dream. Her emotions were torn asunder and she could find no solace in the depths of her thoughts. Knowing they must part had strengthened the barrier about her heart, but that barrier was not made of stones. Their first kiss had brought some of them tumbling down. Now, as he walked away, with an awful lump of desolation in her throat, her heart ached.
