Brooke had never been so nervous to meet the friends of someone she was dating. Not her first girlfriend’s back in college. Not Jaclyn’s. No one else except Taylor. She knew that she was a good person and people should be able to see that, but friends were always quick to be critical and judgmental. Especially the younger they were.

Meeting Taylor’s friends was terrifying because all she could think about now was her age. And it wasn’t even a big deal. They all knew she was forty and that they were ten-years apart. No one batted an eyelash over Brangelina’s twelve-year gap. Although they didn’t end well so maybe that wasn’t the best comparison.

Now as Brooke stood outside of the apartment building where Taylor and her friends were on the roof for an evening of barbeque and cocktails, she remembered what it felt like to be young and entering into these situations for the first time. Or how she judged boyfriends Nina or any of her other friends dated. Or how her own girlfriends were judged. She should have been prepared now – she had years of experience on her side, yet she was terrified.

She wished she told Taylor to meet her earlier so they could arrive together, finding herself a bit anxious to walk into a crowd without the comfort of Taylor beside her. Now who’s the immature one?

She took a deep breath and pushed open the rooftop door to the sound of laughter and music on the other side of the building. She stepped over the concrete divide and heard the voices start to quiet down as they processed that the final guest had arrived.

“Brooke!” Taylor cheered as she bounced over to her girlfriend. “You made it,” she said with a lopsided smile as she threw her arms around Brooke’s shoulders. It was obvious that Taylor was a bit tipsy; also evident from her flirtatious texts scattered with uncharacteristic typos an hour prior. Day drinking was always dangerous, which Taylor should have learned a week prior when she drunkenly showed up at Brooke’s apartment and had a hangover to deal with the day after.

“I made it,” Brooke said as she accepted the sweet kiss on her lips.

“I can’t wait to show you off,” Taylor cooed as she laced their fingers together and dragged Brooke towards where her friends were sitting. Feeling Taylor’s hand in her own gave Brooke all the strength she needed to overcome her fears now. Taylor made her feel like anything was possible, even the harsh criticisms from a group of late twenty somethings.

“Everyone, this is Brooke,” Taylor said as she beamed back at her girlfriend with a proud smile on her face. “Brooke, meet everyone.”

Brooke very quickly learned just who everyone was. There was Jessica, a graphic designer and her tattoo artist boyfriend, Max. Ariana who worked as a book editor and kept her eyes on Brooke longer than she felt comfortable at times. Melinda who had the bluest eyes Brooke had ever seen that periodically would get exposed when she lowered her sunglasses to stare at Brooke.
