Sarai hums while massaging her neck. We’ve been working hard for hours, so I’m sure she’s exhausted and probably hungry, considering it’s almost eight.

“Last section, then we’ll call it a night,” I tell her. “Want to grab something to eat after?”

She side-eyes me with a pinch between her brows. “Is that meant to be an apology for putting your mouth on me?”

I’d never apologize for kissing those sexy lips and tasting that sweet mouth. “You know you wanted it. I see you staring at me every now and then.”

“Pfft. Who’s delusional? Why are you kissing me when you claim to hate me, anyway?”

“Cause I was bored.”

“You…” She clicks her tongue and flicks to the screen.

She’s adorable even when annoyed. “You want to grab dinner or not? I’m buying.”

“Fine. I want a loaded burger from Arnie’s.”

My heart skips at the name, remembering she brought me to the spot one afternoon from school. I don’t think the old man tattled on us to her parents.

“Remember that place?” she asks, squinting.

I sniff and look back at the screen. “No.”

She sucks her teeth and mumbles, “Whatever.”

Finishing up, we gather our stuff and head out in our cars, driving to the beloved burger joint near Woodbury.

A memory plays before my eyes as we enter the packed place. I see us at eleven, laughing with each other at a window table, downing milkshakes and burgers. It was one of the happiest days that went dark when I returned home to find my mom high on the couch.

“Hey, baby girl,” the old man behind the counter greets.

“Hey, Arnie,” Sarai returns cheerfully while we approach the stools. “How you doing?”

“Still kicking.” He laughs throatily and steadies on me. “Who’s this fella? He trying to steal your heart?”

Sarai shakes her head. “He’s my co-worker. I’m putting him on to your one-of-a-kind burger.”

He nods. “Preciate it. How’s it going, young man?”

“I’m well, thank you. What’s this special burger she’s going on about?”

Akin to Birdman, he rubs his aged hands together like he’s about to do something epic. “Don’t worry. I got you. You like the usual toppings and bacon, son?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Great. Before I change your life forever, what would you like to drink with your burgers?”

“I’ll just have a coke, please,” Sarai tells him.

“Same,” I say. “Thanks.”

He pours our drinks, then veers off around back. I hear sizzling and chopping soon after.

Sarai sips a bit before turning to me. “Being here doesn’t spark a memory?”

“Barely,” I mumble, looking at everything except her curious cinnamon-brown eyes.

“I love this place,” she says while I’m taking in all the funny stickers and well-wishes on the wall. “It’s full of good vibes. Great food, music, and good people. I’d stopped coming for a while.” The dip in her voice makes me shift back to her.

“Let me guess. Two years ago?”

I follow the rise and fall of her chest, remembering how her heart pounded wildly while I kissed her.

“It’s a lot of work at the office, huh,” she attempts to change the subject.

“Yeah. As I’ve said, Russ brought me on to complete a plan with him.
