Chapter Eleven

Allie was keen to make her last weeks at the café as good as they could be. She asked Mac if she could add home-made brownies to the menu. He’d tasted one of the ones she’d made for Jock and Pete, and he said yes, definitely. More and more of what they sold was being made in the café.

‘Makes it cheaper,’ said Mac. ‘So thank you very much.’

‘But not cheap enough for you to be able to stay open?’ Allie asked.

‘I’m afraid not. But I’m really thankful for all you’ve been doing. If we were staying open, I’d probably give you a pay rise, or promote you or something.’

‘What would you promote me to?’ asked Allie, interested.

‘Chef in Charge of Home-made Food? Something like that?’

Allie smiled. ‘I’d like that. Shame it’s not going to happen.’

‘Something good will happen for you, Allie. Your great attitude, your hard work, and the fact you’re really good at baking, will all help you to get on.’ He patted her on the shoulder. ‘Hiring you was one of the best things I did. I acted on my gut feeling, and it turned out really well.’

Allie blushed. ‘Thank you,’ she managed to say before heading off to the stockroom. They were working out how they could use up all the stores before they closed.

A few mornings later, Allie opened up the café with Si. A week earlier she had decided to put fairy lights along the front of the building. The café would be closed well before Christmas, but the lights still looked pretty as the days got shorter.

She had already switched on the oven for the croissants and French sticks that Mac would be bringing in shortly. Now she was turning on the coffee machine and the fairy lights, and was making sure Jango’s looked as warm and welcoming as it could. She could hear Mac and Si talking in the kitchen as she moved around, adjusting tables and chairs.

She had just unlocked the café door and turned the sign to ‘Open’ when there was a crash followed by a lot of swearing. She ran into the kitchen and saw Si on the floor, blood pouring from his hand. There was broken glass scattered around him.

‘OK, Si,’ said Mac calmly. ‘Let’s get you up. Can you bring a chair in, Allie?’

When Allie got back with the chair, Si was on his feet. His hand wrapped in a tea towel that was already soaked in blood.

‘Sit down. Hold your arm up above your heart. I’m ringing the local hospital to tell them we’re on our way. Allie? I think he needs another tea towel.’

Allie breathed deeply and tried not to panic. ‘What happened?’ she asked Si.

‘I tripped on the step while I was bringing in the soft drinks, and landed on one of the bottles I dropped.’

‘Oh. That’s bad!’

Over the next few minutes, she did what Mac asked her to do, and smiled at Si when he made jokes about making a mess on the floor.
