John got him to sit down on his front steps and then Shane told him about his friend. "JC had a secretive boyfriend. I never met him. That's why I think he was someone in the closet. When his boyfriend broke up with him, JC kind of fell apart."

"That's why you let him stay with you," John said and held his hand, feeling how cold it was.

Shane nodded. "One night JC wanted to go drinking, and I thought it would help him to unwind, maybe he would meet someone, have some fun. We were drinking a lot, and I'm a lightweight compared to JC. I had more than I should have and it hit me pretty hard. Then JC tried to drive us home. When I wouldn't let him drive, we got into a fight. We struggled over his keys then..." Shane stopped to take a ragged breath as tears dripped from his eyes and he continued through sobs. "I blacked out and JC ended up getting run over. I... I think while we struggled, I must have pushed him into the street. The police found me passed out. They investigated but didn't charge me. I don't know why."

John held his hand tighter. "If you pushed him, don't you think they would have charged you?" he asked, but he just couldn't imagine Shane doing something like that.

"I don't know," Shane sobbed.

"You were helping your friend through a rough time, having him stay with you. I don't believe you would have pushed him," John told him.

Shane pulled his hand free. "You don't know that."

"You don't either. You were trying to keep him safe, not letting him drive while he was drunk and upset. In that state, he could have ended up in the middle of traffic without you doing anything. Which is why you weren't charged with a crime. It wasn't your fault."

Shane wouldn't accept it though. "It was, that's why this is happening to me. JC is angry because he didn't get justice."

"That's not true. You need to move out, and then maybe you'll see things more clearly. Please come and stay with us. Please," John begged him.

"Why would you want to have anything to do with someone like me?" Shane looked away, but then he turned to stare at John challengingly. "It's because you feel sorry for me."

"No. It's because I care about you. I don't want to see anything bad happen to you. If it wasn't for Katie, I would never leave you alone." John spoke in an impassioned voice but then he realized, "That sounds terrible. I'm not some crazy stalker. But I do want to keep you safe because you're important to me. Let me help."

"John, you should turn your back on me, never want to see me again," Shane said.

"That's not happening. Please come home with me," John said and took his hand again and made him stand up. "Tell me you will."

"I was supposed to get food," Shane remembered while looking lost.

That felt like a million years ago, so John decided, "Let's go out and eat.
