CHAPTER 38
Savannah dropped into the chair next to Cassie, but her gaze was locked onto the second man sitting at the table.
Savannah knew this man.
The man with the rakish grin on his face.
Though sheâd only met him briefly, it had been during one of those moments in life that was impossible to forget.
A moment that was seared into her brain along with his image.
An image that had haunted her since that day sheâd taken the steamboat and ended up sitting in a tree.
In the dark.
In the middle of the Mississippi River.
Not a thing a girl was likely to ever forget.
Not to mention his deep blue eyes that twinkled when he looked at her.
She remembered him alright.
His name was Jeb Wright.
And Jeb Wright was a Yankee soldier.
No. A Yankee veteran.
No longer a soldier.
Savannah couldnât get her thoughts to work right.
Cassie nudged her.
Savannah reflexively put the smile back on her face.
âI believe youâre right,â she said. âI believe we may have met.â
âA fortuitous day,â Horace said, his voice booming. âTwo old friends reunited.â
Jeb was watching Savannah with amusement.
âYouâre alive,â Savannah said, her voice barely audible to her own ears.
âI am,â Jeb said. âAlive and well.â
He was indeed well.
More handsome than she remembered. Even in her deepest dreams.
His skin was slightly darker, giving him a healthy glow.
Unlike many of the other men here in Whiskey Springs who looked like they never shaved, Jeb looked like heâd gone no more than a couple of days without shaving. Beneath the stubble, he had a scar that was only visible upon close inspection.
All in all, he had a roguish look about him.
She swallowed.
Handsome.
Dangerously so.
âWhiskey for all,â Horace announced, sending Toby running.
âWould you like a whiskey, Savannah?â Jeb asked.
She smiled.
âYes,â she said. âI would.â
Horace turned his attention back to Cassie. Apparently they had things in common.
Savannah and Jeb just stared at each other.
For all she knew, the only thing they had in common was being on the same exploding steamboat.
But she had more than a feeling that didnât even matter.
