CHAPTER 7

DUNCROFT SCHOOL

‘I don’t think it’s strange not to want to wake up in the morning with one particular person.’

Savile on living alone

By the middle of October 2012 at least five former pupils at Duncroft School had described how Savile had abused them.

Toni Townsend, one of three girls photographed with the star at the school in 1972, said: ‘Jimmy treated Duncroft like a paedophile sweet shop. He used to take his pick of the mix. He would wander around the school in a vest and track suit bottoms. He stayed in a flat on the top floor. He was the only man allowed to stay overnight. Who knows what horrors happened up there?’

Savile told Toni and her two under-age pals who also appeared in the Polaroid snap – showing him with cigar in one hand and his other hand inserted in a girl’s ear – to call him at the BBC Television Centre and said they would be put through to his dressing room. But he warned: ‘Don’t tell anyone I gave you the number.’

Dark-haired Toni, who was put in care after being convicted of shoplifting said: ‘Savile gave me and my friend his number at the BBC and told us to call. He wanted us to visit during our weekend home release. He warned us not to tell anyone he gave us the number. He added: “Make sure you both come down”. Me and my friend wanted to see him at Television Centre. My mate phoned him and phoned him but when he didn’t answer we ran out of time before our curfew to get back to Duncroft.

‘If the BBC covered up the abuse, then that is unforgivable. With all that the BBC knew about him, they still didn’t try to put a stop to it. I think that is ridiculous. The snap I kept all these years shows how inappropriate he was with girls at the time. If a picture tells a thousand words, this tells two thousand.

‘He would grope my leg and shoulder in a sexual way. It sent chills down my spine. It was very creepy. Jimmy would make crude comments and weird noises. He would tickle the back of your neck. It was not right for a man of his age,’ she told the Sun.

‘He seemed to do whatever he wanted – school staff turned a blind eye because of his charity work.

‘Me and my friend felt like we were special – but it was the same lie he fed to other girls. If you were picked by him, you did feel special. You would be asked to sit next to him. He once invited us to be in the audience of his Clunk Click TV show. We sat on beanbags at the front. He even did a radio broadcast from the house.

‘It’s shameful. The school thought the sun shone out of his bottom and catered to his every whim. But we never felt able to say anything. The girls at Duncroft had been sent there by the courts for prostitution, drugs and because they tried to kill themselves.
