Voices murmured on the other side of the door, a swelling sound that threatened to drown Savannah. She pressed her hands to the wall. The vibration of hundreds of footsteps moved into her hands. Swallowing hard, she backed away and glanced around at the members of South of Forever. None of them looked nervous. Jett sat back to back with Koty, each of them tuning their guitars. Griff read from a square-shaped book. From across the room, she couldn’t make out the title, but she thought he had mentioned it being something about marketing. Next to him, Perry swiped through photos on a dating site.

Even Poppy looked calm. As the band’s manager, she should be pacing. She sat on the floor, her gaze intent on the iPad in her hands. For all Savannah knew, she could be shopping for a new outfit.

Savannah sighed. Turning, she started to say something to Max. The space between her eyes crinkled. Biting her lip, she glanced through the small backstage room again.

“Anyone see Max?” Her eyes met Jett’s. Concern lumped in her stomach.

Jett shook her head.

“Bathroom,” Griff replied without lifting his eyes from his book.

Savannah glanced at the door on the other side of the room. She waited for relief to flood through her. It didn’t. Her nerves only tightened even more. “Aren’t you guys going on in like five minutes?”

Poppy kept her eyes on her iPad. “Three.” She tapped the screen, fingers flying.

“So why is he in the bathroom?” Savannah glanced at Jett again, then nodded to the door, silently asking whether she should knock.

Perry put down his phone and stretched toward the ceiling. “Can’t a guy do his business in peace?” Jett glared at him, and he dropped his arms. “Never mind.”

Jumping to her feet, Jett strode toward the door. She rapped her knuckles on the wood. “Come on, Princess. Enough prettying up. We’ve got a show in two.”

“One, actually,” Poppy said, standing. She tucked the iPad under her arm, its screen dark. The others stood, too.

Taking a deep breath, Savannah crossed the room. She knocked on the door. “You okay, Max?”

No answer came from the other side.

Savannah’s frown deepened. She looked at Jett, raising an eyebrow.

Jett turned to Koty. “You wanna go in there and get him?”

“Whoa.” Koty held up his hands. “I’m not manhandling anyone.”

Rolling her eyes, Jett knocked on the door again. “I wasn’t asking you to. I just figured he might get his ass moving if another guy came in.” She raised her voice. “Are you puking in there, Princess?”

“Jett doesn’t do well when her band members flake out,” Griff said to Savannah. “A few years ago, when Perpetual Smile’s rhythm guitarist first got diagnosed with cancer, we hired someone to cover a couple shows.”

“Can we not talk about this?” Jett glared at him.

“She’s also still touchy when it comes to Phillip.” Griff sighed.

Koty put an arm around Jett’s waist. “It’s okay.”

“It’s not that.” Jett wriggled out of his grasp. “We’re on now. Max, get your ass out here.
