TWENTY

I followed at his heels as he charged to the living room window. We stepped up to the curtain, which was already slightly parted as Stone peered down to the street.

Several roamers zipped through the air several feet from where we stood as a line of insectoids carrying cocoons marched down the street. One of the insectoids bumped into another, throwing it into the building across the street, causing a loud boom.

“Holy shit,” Stone growled as he turned to meet Atlas’s gaze. He pointed at the street below. “You see that?”

My pulse hammered in my ears as I looked down at the insectoids, their metallic limbs glinting with light from the mothership. They marched with eerie precision, staying in line as the roamers above seemed to guide them down the road. The cocoons were unmistakably human forms trapped within a white goo prison, some jerking in desperate attempts at freedom.

My stomach churned as a wail pierced through the silence. Stephanie’s voice was unraveling into a sheer panic. “They’re coming for us! Oh my God, they are coming for us!”

Rex slapped his hand down over Stephanie’s mouth. It was a grotesque parade of despair, and we couldn’t do anything about it. The insectoids must have stumbled upon a large group of survivors that were unable to escape.

“Are we next?” Emily asked, her voice quivering.

Rex pounded his fist against the wall, his face contorted in anger and fear. “You see this, Atlas?” he hissed. “We need to do something!”

“Would you be quiet?” Atlas said, grabbing Rex by the shoulder and pulling him away from the window. “What do you suggest, hm? Rush out there and get ourselves killed?”

Rex’s face deepened to a dark shade of red from an intense blend of embarrassment, anger, and fear. Stone closed the curtains and turned on both of them.

“Quiet down right now before they hear us, and we’re wrapped up in those things and taken away,” Stone growled.

Atlas held his hands up as he took a step back while Rex straightened his shirt. Stone looked back and forth between them until he was sure they were done with their little spat.

“What’s the use?” Stephanie said, throwing her hands in the air as tears streamed down her cheeks. “We’re all already dead anyway.”

“Enough!” I said, rage fueling my voice. Everyone turned to me, scouring my expression for any hint of a strategy. “We need to stay quiet and keep out of sight, or we will end up in those things.”

Stone held up both hands. “Everyone, go back to what you were doing and stay out of sight. Blow out the candles. No light. No sound.”

The insectoids continued their loud march down the street. Terrah moved first, sitting on the far end of the sofa, pulling her legs to her chest before picking at her fingernails.

Emily and Cassi moved around, blowing out all the candles. Atlas remained at my side while Stone watched out between the small opening between the closed curtains.

It wasn’t until all thirty to forty insectoids were gone that Rex broke the silence.
