“You’re sure you’re okay with me leaving?” Luke asked. “I don’t have to go.”

“Yes, you do.” I looked forward to having the house to myself with Emmie. Cassandra, Carly, and Grace had left early this morning for their getaway. “You and Anthony should see your family for the holidays.”

“It should be a slow week at the club. I don’t anticipate any problems there.”

“Where do you anticipate the problems?”

“Morelli is in upstate New York visiting family. He shouldn’t be an issue.”

“We’re going to have to deal with him sooner or later.” I didn’t like how quiet Morelli had been since I’d confronted him that night at the club. “We have to send a message. He has to know what he did with that shipment was disrespectful.”

“Is it just the shipment you want him to answer for?” Luke asked.

“What does that mean?”

“The way you went after him that night at the club had less to do with the shipment and more to do with Emmie.”

“Should I have let him have free access to her? Am I not supposed to protect her?”

I made sure Morelli understood that Emmie was under my protection. He may have thought he had gotten away with unloading that shipment at my dock, but when it came to her, all bets were off.

“I didn’t say that, but he is a problem that won’t go away as easily as I would like,” Luke said. “We can’t take him out without alerting the local mob presence. The cartel will only let us push so far. They don’t want a war.”

“Do you think I want one?”

“After the holidays, we’ll have to find a way to make peace and co-exist. I don’t want to think about the alternative.”

“I don’t want to think about it at all.” I would have to deal with Morelli. The cartel would expect it. Sooner or later they would have to allow me to take him out. He would end up hurting their business interests if I didn’t. “What about Jaxon?” I asked Luke.

“He’s still staying in a suite overlooking the harbor.”

“That’s concerning.” I shut my laptop. “Who is funding that?”

“Maybe he borrowed money from someone?”

“Who would be stupid enough to lend him money? Every loan shark in this city knows I covered his last debt. They all know who Emmie is and that she’s with me. No one is going to bankroll him.”

“I’ll find his source,” Luke said. “This is why I need to stay in town.”

“No.”

“I don’t feel right about leaving you. This seems like the calm before the storm. I can’t put my finger on it, but now might not be the time for me to go.”

“We’ve handled far worse. You take Anthony to visit your family. He’s been looking forward to it. Emmie and I will lay low. We’re going to stay here for a few days. Just the two of us.” I gazed up at the gift she had given me that now hung over the fireplace in my study. “We’ll be fine.”

“She’s really talented.
