"I believe I can do it," I insisted. "I've held some pretty important jobs. I got down on my luck through drinking, but I'm all right now."
He hesitated. "Know anything about accounting?"
"Well ... "
"I see. Can you read blueprints?"
"Well, not exactly, but-"
"Better get back to your work," he said.
As soon as I finished dinner that night, I hurried down to the public library. I drew out every book I could get on blueprint reading and accounting and took them home. I was still reading the next morning when my wife set toast and coffee in front of me.
