Sam West was not a man who frightened easily.

Several tours of duty had seen to that. With the loss of his wife, and his rapidly advancing years, death no longer held the same frostbitten chill it once had.

Or so he had thought.

Now, encircled by a group of men and women, most of them less than half his age, he felt a prickle of terror in his heart.

He was going to die tonight.

“Well, what do we have here?” said one of the men. He held a machete loosely, the blade swinging back and forth like a pendulum.

“They’re dead,” came a shouted voice from nearby. “Ripper and Carol. He fucking killed ‘em, man!”

The leader — Marduk, he had called himself — crouched by Sam, cocking his head and smiling humorlessly.

“What in the hell were you thinking, old timer?” There was no malice in his voice. Just curiosity. “You come here for revenge, is that it? You gonna wipe us out?”

“Still might,” said Sam, though the threat was overpowered by a needling, high-pitched tremor in his speech.

“Oh, I don’t think so,” said Marduk. He laughed then, a booming sound that ended as quickly as it began. He shook his head. “You thought you could handle us all?”

“I got two of you.”

“Seems you did. Two of our coven, our blessed brother and sister. You’ve spilled the blood of the Burnouts, man. That ain’t cool. That ain’t cool at all. We’ve lost three people today. Your friend took out Mary back in the diner, but she paid the price. I understand why she did it, though. Desperation. She acted. She tried to protect someone.” He ran his calloused hand down Sam’s cheek. “You, on the other hand… you had your chance. You had your chance, but you stood and watched with your limp old-man boner. Tell me, old timer. If that other woman hadn’t been there… would you have stopped us? Or would you have watched? Hell, maybe you’d have joined in? When was the last time you got some sweet-ass pussy, my man?”

“I wouldn’t,” said Sam. His eyes clouded. “I’d never…”

“Yeah, you’d never. Sure. That’s what they all say. But not us. Not the Burnouts. We don’t live by society’s rules. We’re free, like eagles soaring through the cloudless sky.” He stared wistfully into the night sky, then turned to Sam and grinned. “But horny eagles. Eagles that worship our Lord in Hell. Satan. Beelzebub. Call him what you will, but—”

“How ‘bout you shut up a minute?” said Sam. He glanced around. Nine bikers remained. He still had his revolver tucked into his pants, but only had five shots.

No wait… four shots. One bullet was lodged in the wall of Fiona’s Diner.

It was not enough. But better than nothing? Yeah, sure. Why not?

Marduk spoke again. “You like to party, old timer?”

Sam looked at him, not comprehending the words. “What?”

“I said, do you like to party? We do.” Marduk chuckled. “We don’t just drive across the country sacrificing chicks every night. That would get boring, am I right?” He glanced around for confirmation.
