* * * *

Hunter stared at the group of men in front of him. Finally, after days of seeing nothing more than trees, trees, and more trees, something was happening.

Michael pressed his body against Hunter’s side. “What?” he mouthed.

Hunter tilted his chin toward the people in front of them. He and Michael were hiding in the bushes, and they were ready to grab those guys if Sarah gave them the signal.

Michael nodded and wiggled away. Hunter held his breath, but the three men didn’t seem to hear anything. Hunter relaxed. Michael was back within a few minutes, still as silent as he’d been when he’d left. He got on his stomach again and held up three fingers. Hunter frowned and tilted his chin toward the three men. Michael shrugged and held up three fingers again.

Hunter had a hard time believing there were only three men there. The place was being used as a holding area for the drugs that were being made not far away. Their job was to take care of the guys here, and Hunter was pretty sure that putting three men to guard who knew how large a stash of drugs wasn’t a smart idea. That didn’t mean that wasn’t what was happening, because the bad guys were sometimes stupid, but he didn’t like this.

There was another team working at the site where the drugs were being made, and they’d raid it at the same time Hunter’s team took care of the depot area.

Three men still didn’t make sense, though. Even if some of them were ferrying the drugs from the place where they were made, there was a lot of stuff there. Drugs and weapons—nothing anyone would leave laying around without guards.

“Sarah?” he mouthed.

Michael nodded. They waited, both of them staring at the men. And when the signal came, they moved.

Michael took one of the guys while Hunter headed for another. Lucy took the third one.

Hunter knew for sure something was wrong when another two men came crashing from the forest. He swore and dispatched the first guy. The new ones were different, and a sense of dread made his stomach feel like lead.

The first three men had just been guards. These men were wearing the Beasts insignia on their jackets. That meant they were shifters, and that they weren’t there to play.

Hunter punched the closest guy in the face and stuck his knife into the guys’ stomach. He didn’t go down, but then, Hunter hadn’t expected him to. A good kick in the nuts took care of that, and with the blood dripping from the knife wound, Hunter didn’t think he’d have to worry about the guy again.

His heart dropped when he turned and saw that Michael was fighting off two Beasts. He was good, but he was smaller than they were, and even though he managed to avoid several punches and a few of the knife blows, the Beasts finally got to him. The knife pushed into his shoulder, and he screamed. The other Beast took advantage of that and swung his knife, too, digging it into Michael’s thigh.
