Chapter Twelve

Sarah

I’ve never been a big believer in coincidences or things “happening for a reason.” People explain bad things away with that reason, and say if we’re patient we’ll eventually discover the good that it was setting up.

Some people might have explained the accident that killed Jamie that way, saying it made the relationship between Ian and I stronger. You know, find the silver lining and all.

You could even say the most recent accident was meant to be, too, because it made me see Ian for who he really was. But, that negates the “good” from the first accident, so it doesn’t make sense. And somehow the accident or something around that time brought me this talent—was that possible?—and the talent then brought Michael into my life.

Yeah, I could pick through all the events of the last few years and try to connect the dots. But like I said, I don’t believe in things like that. So why was I trying to connect these dots?

I discovered my father was Irish and my mother hid that part of her life from me. Then Michael asks me to come to Ireland. There were certainly a lot of dots about this whole thing that seemed to connect.

I was halfway considering reaching out to the records office in Ireland to see if I could track down my mother’s marriage license, but I wasn’t sure if it worked the same way in Ireland. Could I order a copy online?

Would there be any point in telling Michael about it? No, probably not. It would be another strange thing that he might not believe.

I was thinking this all over in bed that morning, not knowing that things would get even weirder after I got up. The first odd thing was hearing Melody in the kitchen and realizing she wasn’t at work. At first I thought I was mixed up on days and it was actually the weekend. That can happen easier than you think when you’re home all the time, not working. But my phone confirmed it wasn’t the weekend and it was well past her early morning work schedule.

I padded out to the kitchen to find her at the table with her laptop.

“It wouldn’t be that expensive to fly over,” she greeted me. I went to the cupboard for a mug and poured a cup of coffee. As I fixed it with the cream and sugar, she went on about how we could save money on the tickets through a new credit card offer.

I stared down into my mug, then breathed the aroma. “If we go... and I do mean IF, I can get the tickets.”

She looked up blankly. After a few blinks, she asked, “You’ll get the tickets?”

I sat down at the table with her, feeling a full on conversation coming on.

“I have lots of miles saved up.” I hadn’t spent money on much of anything in, well, forever. Ian and I had stayed home and lived on his settlement from the first accident. I had my retirement, savings, and emergency fund taken care of, and I had money in a vacation account.
