I understood how wrong I was as soon as I saw my aunt waiting outside the deli, a brown envelope tightly secured under her arm, head tucked against the wind but not enough to hide the scowl on her face. She looked older than I remembered, her dry skin dusted with a layer of hopelessness.
She also seemed a million miles away and I fidgeted as I waited for her to say something. âIâm sorry, Sandie. I thought I could do this but I canât.â By âthisâ my aunt meant lunch. She gave me the envelope and walked away. I waited for a backward glance that never came. All these years Iâd thought of myself as the receiver of hurts, large and small, many of them inflicted by my aunt. It had never occurred to me that the wounds were reciprocal.
âWait!â
I ran after Stella, leaping over a sandwich board on the sidewalk in my haste. She turned around. âWhat?â
âIâm sorry.â
âNo, youâre not.â
I checked myself to see if this pronouncement was true. It wasnât. âI want to make amends.â
Stella rolled her eyes. âI never thought Iâd live to see the day. If you mean it, then come by the house for Gileâs birthday. Itâs on October twelfth.â
Ten months from now. Maybe Stella would be in a more forgiving mood by then. âOkay,â I said, and we parted, a truce having been called with no swap of smiles or hugs.
On my way back to the subway, I opened the envelope, checking to make sure it contained the papers I needed. At the sight of my birth certificate and original social security card, my vision blurred. Sandie Donovan was coming back to life, although she wasnât there yet. Iâd never had a driverâs license with my real name on it. As soon as possible, Iâd go to the DMV in Washington Heights and apply for one.
