“Good morning Bryna. I thought you might like some breakfast.” Bartholomew said.

The voice woke her from a deep sleep. Still groggy, she wondered how it could be time for food. No one had tended to any of the needs of the prisoners until it was much later in the day.

“It’s already time to eat?” Bryna found herself saying as she struggled to get her legs underneath her.

“You know I could use some food too!” A familiar voice said from a cell across from Bryna.

“Hedria? Is that you? Oh dear! I saw your candlesticks in John Corwin’s house. I had prayed I was wrong, but apparently was not.”

“Bryna, it was awful, I was questioned for days. That bastard John Corwin has been eyeing those candlesticks for years. I knew he would keep them for himself.”

“I have enough food here for the both of you.” Bartholomew said trying to shake Hedria of her anger.

Bartholomew handed a plate over to Bryna. It was filled with scrambled eggs and bread.

“Do you have another plate for Hedria?”

He then took out another plate and filled it with eggs too and then handed the plate off to Hedria. Bartholomew then ate a piece of bread with both women.

“You both seem like such sweet ladies. I’m so sorry my father and uncle have you in here.”

Bryna nearly choked on her eggs from Bartholomew’s statement. She had no idea that this man, the one Brody told her to trust, was a Corwin.

“I’m sure you could get into a lot of trouble feeding us like this.” Hedria said. “It’s a nice gesture—don’t get me wrong—but I’m sure your father wouldn’t be too happy with you. Perhaps you should go before anyone sees you with us.”

“He sends me here and says it is because he is busy. I think his guilt keeps him from coming. I know he is not doing God’s work. And this is why I feel compelled to do what God wants.” Bartholomew stated firmly.

“Well, it is good that you want to do God’s work, but you best get back with your father before he gets suspicious.” Bryna stated.

“I’ll be back. I promise, Bryna.”
