“There we go.” I smile at my neighbor. “Safe and sound!”
“I’ve just been eavesdropping,” pipes up the window-seat traveler. “I’ve been silently piggybacking on your prayers.”
“You mean our whole row has been praying?” my neighbor asks.
“Yes, and here we are, safe and sound,” I announce.
“Next time I fly, I’ll skip the martinis.”
“And I’ll skip the scotch.” Both of my neighbors are smiling.
“Next time I fly, I’ll think of you,” I say.
I punch my daughter’s phone number into the cell phone. She answers on the second ring. “You made it.”
“Yes, it was bumpy, but I’m here.”
“You sound calmer.”
“Yes, I had good seatmates. That always helps.”
My seatmate is listening to my call. “Glad to be of service!” I hang up. “Good you have someone to call.”
“It’s my daughter. She worries about my worry.”
A flight attendant’s voice comes on the air: “Please remain in your seats with your seat belts securely fastened until the plane arrives at the gate.”
“They take every precaution,” I say. “They don’t want a stampede.”
“Who wants to be trampled?” asks the window-seat traveler.
The captain’s voice cuts the air: “This is your captain. We realize you had your choice of carriers, and we want to thank you for choosing to fly with us. Your seat-belt sign is turned off, and you are free to move about the cabin.”
“Ah, here we go.” I turn to my neighbors. “Well, it was a pleasure—that is, you, not the flight.”
“Back at you!”
