Chapter Fourteen

Audrey was sitting on the edge of the lounge chair with a glass of cold pressed orange juice in one hand and the witty and mysterious works of Liane Moriarty in the other. It was a book about nine strangers coming together at a rather odd kind of wellness retreat.

The book was nothing like the week Audrey was spending at Ibhubesi Lodge, where the only people to dictate your itinerary was yourself or sometimes those of the other guests who wouldn’t take no for an answer. Like Harriet, who had sought Audrey out after a swim in the pool yesterday. She yammered on and on about the kori bustard bird, who reminded her of her ex, Mitch. She explained the similarities were because of its ability to inflate its oesophagus four times at the height of the mating season. Apparently, Mitch liked to inflate his ego four times whenever they were out in public.

The last two days had gone by in an unforgivable blur.

One minute, she and Julia had returned from the romantic sunrise game drive and the next they had been swept up in conversation with others. They were like two rag dolls destined to be together but couldn’t because figurative hands kept pulling them apart. Others were constantly bombarding them with questions and the chatter of their own lives.

But the only life Audrey cared about was Julia’s and she was no closer to understanding the woman’s mind than she was to solving the mysteries of the Loch Ness monster.

And besides the lack of time spent together, they also hadn’t had sex again.

That small fact was something that both disappointed Audrey but also intrigued her. What was that saying? Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Well, it definitely appeared to do just that.

She had this aching thirst to see Julia naked again, but no matter what, her thirst couldn’t be quenched. The opportunity to do anything more than just share a quick kiss seemed as impossible as seeing a family of leopards out and about in the daylight.

Audrey found herself undressing Julia every time she saw her. With her eyes, of course, caressing the woman’s curves like the tip of a finger.

It took all her willpower not to grab hold of the woman’s hand and lead her to a place quiet and private, where she could consume every inch of her. Not that there were many opportunities for privacy.

Last night, Audrey had nearly snuck down the hallway at midnight and gone knocking on Julia’s door. But she didn’t because it seemed like such a college-like thing to do. It was something she would’ve done when she was twenty and had very little control over her actions.

Instead, she had lain awake all night hoping Julia would come knocking on her door.

Audrey took a slow sip of her refreshing juice. It was delicious, one of the best she ever tasted. As she took another, she watched a small bird with a white chest hop about the deck in front of her. It was looking for insects, no doubt, or maybe some crumbs from an unfinished meal.
