Chapter Thirty-Six

We’d barely put our knives and forks together when Felix’s mobile rang. The phone was in the back pocket of his trousers. After the fifth ring, I looked at him curiously.

‘Aren’t you going to answer that?’

‘Yeah,’ he said vaguely. ‘I’ll just…’ He got up and moved towards the television. Picking up the remote control, he lowered the volume, at the same time extracting the mobile, making sure his palm covered the screen, hiding the identity of the caller.

‘Dad!’ he said jovially. ‘How’s it going? Oh. I’m sorry to hear that. Okay, no problem. I explained the situation earlier to Sadie and said I might have to pop out. That’s fine, we’ve just eaten. You’re starving? Well perhaps you can grab something en-route to the theatre, so you don’t upset Mother.’

The theatre? Earlier, Felix had mentioned a dinner party. My fiancé was having trouble keeping track of his lies.

‘I’ll leave now. Hopefully the traffic won’t be too bad. See you soon.’ He disconnected the call and looked at me with regret. ‘Sorry, sweetheart. Looks like I have to go out after all.’

‘That’s all right,’ I smiled. ‘I’ll come with you.’

Felix looked aghast. ‘Whatever for?’

‘To keep you company, of course.’

‘There’s no need for that, darling. I’ll be in and out in a jiffy.’

Yes, one could describe your recent lovemaking as thus.

‘But I want to,’ I insisted. ‘Honestly, it’s no bother. I haven’t seen you all day. We’ll have a nice chat while waiting for the engineer.’

‘No, darling. If you don’t mind, it gives me a chance to catch up on some paperwork. I won’t be able to concentrate on the figurework if you’re chattering away.’

I’ll bet. You’ll be preoccupied with another number. Sixty-nine briefly flashed into my mind. Stop, Sadie. This whole situation is bad enough, don’t torment yourself further.

‘Felix.’ My voice caught in the back of my throat. He looked at me, startled, and, for a moment, a look of wariness crossed his face. ‘Don’t go,’ I whispered. ‘Please.’

His face relaxed and he walked over to me. ‘Stop being a silly goose,’ he said, sweeping me into his arms and giving me a big squashy bear hug.

‘Do you love me?’ I quavered.

‘More than words can say,’ he said, hugging me harder. ‘Come on, Sadie. This isn’t like you. Make the most of me being out. You can pore over the wedding planner without me making comments that drive you potty. Give it a tweak. Add another adorable bridesmaid. Email the florist and triple the size of your bouquet. Be a bit of a bridezilla.’

‘No chance of that,’ I replied. Not with Tara Barrington-Jones at the helm.

Felix planted a kiss on the top of my head. ‘I must go. Dad’s waiting. See you later.’

I watched silently as Felix grabbed his car keys. Following him out to the hall, I said nothing as he laced up his shoes and then plucked his jacket from the coat stand. He gave me one final hug before opening the door and stepping out onto the landing.
