Chapter Twenty Seven

Standing in a crowded bar, I watch the clock tick down, and when it strikes twelve, I grab his face and give him a kiss. “Happy birthday, Lucas.”

“Happy New Year, baby.” He kisses me back, the taste of beer on his tongue.

Tonight, I am acting as the designated driver for Lucas and a few of his friends, since he is now twenty-one.

Mickey, one of the defensive ends, asks, “Can we hit the strip clubs now?”

“Are you crazy?” I laugh.

“You only turn twenty-one once, baby,” Lucas says, and because it’s his birthday and he’s drinking … a lot, I try not to take it personally. But that’s not to say I don’t make a point.

“You have a better chance of seeing God.” And then I walk away, heading to the bathroom.

After the festivities, he all but passes out … inside of me.

The next morning, he’s slow to come around, but we’re still on break, and our plan is to head to Jade and Ryan’s, for their first New Year’s day family party, which doesn’t start until around two.

The first thing he does when he comes into the kitchen, where I am baking bread and making dips, is turn me around and hug me. “Sorry, baby.”

“You only turn twenty-one once,” I mimic his slur from last night.

He steps back and looks down at me. I smile, but it doesn’t last long.

“Been a year.”

I nod. “Been a year.”

He hugs me tightly, and I hug him tighter.
