“I have to say that I’m quite surprised by what you managed to pull off so far using that weak body of yours,” Enma whispered in my right ear. I snapped my head around but she was nowhere to be seen.

“True,” Enmu added. “I don’t know why I felt—never mind.”

“Never mind what, Goddess?” I asked curiously. She still didn’t appear, and instead, the darkness somehow became even darker. How was that even possible?

“I said never mind, so don’t ask, mortal. Instead, you should be worried about what we’ll do to you!”

“Would it be alright if I rather not?” I asked. Just then I realized how sarcastic it sounded and slapped myself mentally.

“You’ve gathered fifty-one percent favor with me, Belial,” Enma said, interrupting us. “With that, you’ve barely managed to activate what I gave you last time.”

“Activated? Last time? Wait, did it have something to do with that drink?”

She finally appeared before me, nodding as she floated about ten feet from me. Enmu appeared beside her, holding a golding file in her hands, doing one nail at a time as if I wasn’t even there. It both felt and looked so surreal, but luckily, I had always been one to believe in things rather quickly.

“Of course it did. Now, when you wake up, don’t hold it against us. It was the only way to make you immortal, so to say.”

“Immortal? What are you on about? There are no ways for us mortals to attain immortality!”

“Oh, there are. But it won’t be what you’re expecting, Belial,” Enma cackled. “Oh no, you’ll wish you never agreed to our deal. Now, how about you wake up and check your new body out, save your friends and run. There’s no way for you to fight the Legion in the state you’re in.”

I gritted my teeth and clenched my fists. The sisters made me furious for who knew which time, by the way they handled everything, which seemed to be malicious goodwill at its best.

“Do I stay an Awakened?” I asked, hopeful that I wouldn’t have to start anew.

“Yes, you do. However, you’ll be slightly different when you wake up, maybe even a bit overpowered once you get a hang on your powers. I’ll give you a slight edge for passing the mark, but as to what it is that you got, well, you’ll have to see for yourself.”

“Enma, I tire of this creature. Come, have him at it already so we can see who won our bet,” Enmu said with zero emotion. Bet, huh? And the fifty-percent threshold? This is the second time she mentioned it.

“And if I hadn’t gathered as much—favor?”

“You would have stayed dead, it’s as simple as that,” Enma replied, her pearl-white teeth showing.

“Thank you for the confidence,” I murmured, annoyed by the way this turned out. Never in my wildest dreams had I thought of becoming an immortal, but then again, never had I thought I’d die so young either.

“You’re welcome,” she whispered, winked once, and then struck me with darkness so dense my consciousness faded.
