Chapter Seventeen
âIt's a radio that works when you wind it up,â Greg explained, standing in the foyer of the Merrington Stanley and looking at the device on the reception desk. âIt's a long story, but we ended up with it and the damn thing actually works.â
He turned to see that Colin was over by one of the other desks, staring down at Steve's bloodied corpse.
âWhat's wrong?â he continued. âAre you finding it hard to believe that dainty little J.T. â sorry, Anna â is capable of doing that to someone?â
âIt looks like she beat him to death,â Colin replied, peering at the shattered crown of bone and the pools of brain matter that had oozed out in a bloody mess across the floor. âIt looks like she literally stamped on his head and...â
âThat's about it,â Greg continued. âI don't know her much better than you do, but I've seen what happens when the rage leaks out of her. It's always so fast, like a switch has been flicked in her head, and it never lasts for more than a few minutes. Seconds, even. But if you're unlucky enough to be in her way, there's no limit to what she'll do to you.â
âAnd she was leading your little group?â
âI know it sounds crazy now,â Greg continued, âbut at the time it kind of made sense. Most of us were running around like complete lunatics, but she seemed so steady and she pulled us all together. I don't mind admitting, I probably wouldn't be here if I hadn't run into her. It was like she just had the answers to everything. I've never met anyone that charismatic before.â
âAre you really sure that it's the same person?â
âThis isn't the kind of thing you make a mistake about.â
Sighing, Colin continued to look at the corpse for a moment before slowly making his way back over.
âLet me guess,â Greg said, watching him closely, âshe got into your head, huh? She's so good at that. She doesn't look too impressive, but that woman knows how to manipulate anyone into doing just about anything for her. She's not even above using her feminine charms in the process, either.â
âWhat do you mean by that?â
âJust that we've all had a taste of her by now,â he added with a faint smile. âShe knows how to keep people in line, if you catch my drift. And judging by the look in your eyes, I'm betting that you know exactly what I'm talking about. I feel so dumb for having fallen for it, but everything happened so fast and I really didn't have much time to think straight. I mean, seriously, that woman deserves a hashtag all of her own, just for the stuff she's done so far.â
âWe found her in the street,â Colin explained.
âThat was her plan. She told us she wanted to get in here.â
âWhy?â
âBecause she thought you guys had a good thing going on. Her plan was always to get past your defenses and take control from the inside, then to call for the rest of us.
