CHAPTER 15
LAY OF THE LAND
âYou are the War Leader, yes?â a centaur wearing only jagged lines of red and brown warpaint asked, riding over to where Benjamin and his companions were still slowly rising.
âMe? War leader? What?â Benjamin asked, unsure who the giant was addressing as he pointed to Matt and yawned. âI think youâre looking for him.â
âBah! It does not matter. Since I am forbidden from eating you, I am sworn to help you instead. You are the one that spoke with the Throne, so you are the one I will speak with now,â The centaur spat.
A lot of questions went through Benjaminâs mind. Did everyone else not have the same bad trip that he did? Was she really the Throne after all? Why were the centaurs helping them?
Talk of eating them, combined with those sharpened yellowed teeth, banished all those thoughts for a moment. Instead he automatically prepared to defend himself.
He wasnât the only one, either. For a few tense moments, the sheer violent aura of the eight-foot-tall demihuman put everyone on edge, while they sorted out the details of the who, the what, and the why.
The centaurs were just another sort of fae, as it turned out. Well, not precisely, but they were closer to the fae than the beastmen or the clay people.
The centaurs considered themselves to be far above them, at least. Their leader, Thorga, made it very clear that even the lowest of the clay people was well above the manthings.
âYou are as ignorant as babies in the ways of war!â the centaur chastised them. âYour victories are small, your body counts are low, and you have no trophies! You do not even destroy the waystones that you pass by! You are less than useless!â
Benjamin was about to point out that the fewer people they killed, the faster their army grew and that it was a sound strategy, but Matt beat him to the punch. âWeâve been doing pretty great so far,â his friend growled. âHow many of the Summoner Lords have you killed?â
This made Thorga and several other centaurs laugh, but he ignored the assertion. âIf you are so clever in your strategies and tactics, then why do you march straight into the trap your enemies have prepared for you?â
âTrap?â Benjamin asked, perking up. âWhat do you mean?â
This made them laugh even louder before Thorga shouted, âBring me some blood wine so that I may show these manthings their shame and folly!â
One of the clay people rose from the soil and ran over to him even before Benjamin could refuse. One round of hallucinogens had been quite enough for him, and the last thing he wanted was to get drunk this early in the morning.
The wine wasnât for drinking. Instead, the centaur opened up the spout and sprayed lines of the crimson fluid onto the ground in a wide circle, while he mumbled a guttural chant under his breath that made the hairs on the back of Benjaminâs neck stand up.
He ignored that, though, and focused on the way the earth began to churn and reshape itself.
