The following Sunday after church, Joscelyn met Cade and Sadie in the arena at Wolf Run. “Today we’ll try an exercise that’s designed to improve communication. We’ll only work with one horse. Sadie, would you please go get Fargo?”

“Sure.” Sadie skipped off. She seemed excited to be doing something with her dad.

While they waited for her, Joscelyn built a small jump in the center of the arena. She glanced up at Cade and asked, “How was your week?”

Cade’s eyes darted across the horizon before he answered. “Lots of nightmares and I still can’t remember them when I wake up. It sucks.” He helped Joscelyn by picking up the other end of a ground pole. They set it across two bales of hay.

“What about when you’re awake? Any difficult memories?”

“I haven’t tackled anyone, if that’s what you mean.” Cade tried for humor. When Joscelyn smiled, he answered, “Sometimes, when I’m out here working, I flashback. How can I make it stop?”

Joscelyn was pleased to see he was interested in getting better. “Do you notice any specific triggers?”

Cade shook his head, thinking. “Sometimes a loud noise or a flash of light. They come out of nowhere and take over.”

“Don’t feel bad about not being able to control them. That’s normal at first. As a general rule, traumatic memories will continue to intrude until they make sense, until you can process them to the point where your brain can file them into your long-term memory.”

Cade rested his hands on his hips. “How do I do that?”

“Talking about it helps.”

Cade rolled his eyes and turned away.

“I know you don’t want to hear that, but our memory system is built on language. So, when you put words to your memories it helps you process them.”

Sadie came out of the barn leading Fargo. In the arena, there were a couple of ground-poles pushed off to the side next to a stack of orange traffic cones. Joscelyn removed Fargo’s halter, and he wandered to the rail, trying to reach the grass growing on the other side.

“Sadie, you’ve done this type of exercise before.” Joscelyn winked at her. “Today, the goal for you two, as a team, is to get Fargo to go over the jump. There are four rules.” Joscelyn held up her index finger. “No one can touch Fargo. You may not use halters or lead ropes in any fashion. You may not bribe him with any food or simulate bribing, and you may use only what is in the arena.”

Joscelyn clapped her hands together. “Okay, we’ll try this for five minutes and then if Fargo hasn’t gone over the jump yet, we’ll take a break. Ready… set… go.” She glanced at her watch.

Cade expertly herded the horse toward the jump. Sadie tried to help, but Cade ignored her. It looked like Fargo headed straight for the jump, but at the last minute he veered off and moved around it. Cade shook his head and sent an exasperated look to Joscelyn. She flattened her lips and raised her eyebrows to acknowledge him, but she didn’t say anything.
