The Mitchel Sisters’ Updated Guide to an Awesome Life—Rule no. 2: Always go out looking your best but keep it appropriate to the situation.

On Monday, I hobble around work in flats—flats—thanks to the blister on my heel. Even two bandages are not enough to stop the pain from seeping through in every step I take. And this is from someone who often sacrifices comfort for fashion. Normally though, I save those feet-killing shoes to walk from the car to the restaurant table and back again. Not many steps involved there. But I have been on my feet all day and completely preoccupied with how soothing it will be to soak them in a bath at home.

Visions of Epsom salts dance in my head as the clock strikes six. Time to clock out, baby.

“You hoo, excuse me.” Velour-mom walks toward me like a woman on a mission. “I don’t know what kind of magic powers you have, but you are the only one who can get through to him. Can you please be the one to give him guitar lessons? The other lessons are a complete disaster.”

“I’d love to help you, but I’m not an instructor here.”

“I don’t care. You can come to my house, or I’ll bring him to yours. Here is my phone number. Call me when you have a chance and we will work out the details. I won’t take no for an answer.”

She strides out of the store, head held high like I’ve already agreed. Sorry to disappoint, I whisper to the paper as it’s crumpled up, but my fingers won’t release it into the garbage can. Instead, it’s jammed into my pocket.
