Flynn’s body makes the fourth twist down into the concrete manger of the half-pipe. The point of upside-down waiting is the period at the end of the sentence, and she skates, sentence after sentence, swinging up, waiting weightless again—the top of her head poised above the hard cement. She wears cutoff Levi’s and a man’s A-shirt, no bra, combat boots with no socks. She’s shaved one side of her head with dog clippers. One of her knees is deeply brush burned. The music is loud but there’s no one to hear it for miles. When she sees pictures of this time, she recognizes only her eyes. All she wanted was to read books and drink beer, and skate. At fifteen she was still climbing trees and up onto abandoned factory roofs; still building forts, stealing people’s lawn ornaments, eating candy for dinner. She had sex with her boyfriend in the attic when her parents were gone, surrounded by boxes of mildewed books, saved schoolwork, and broken furniture.

Sometimes she’d swim alone in the muddy and swollen river, staying close to the bank, her feet sinking into the silt. She wished White could have had that summer. Could take off the miniskirt and broken watch. But the idea of White sitting at a table with two preppie boys as they talked about the best place to see money stick to naked human skin makes her hate the dead girl all over again. Why did White sit there with them, at the edge of her grave? Why had she been there at all?
