“There was no incident at the Veterans Hospital,” Dorian said in a low, controlled voice. He knew he’d opened a Pandora’s Box when he insisted Gatsby accompany him on the remaining appearances, but he wanted to spend more time getting to know Emmie. It wasn’t his fault the press had captured an innocent moment and turned it into something else. They did stuff like that all the time.

“The press is insinuating there was. After the accusations from Ms. Easton, I would think you’d be more mindful of whom you’re consorting with.”

Dorian took a deep breath, his patience worn thin. “Who I consort with is not your concern.”

“Your Highness, she—”

“Enough,” Dorian snapped, cutting her off. “We’re not having this discussion here. Or anywhere. Emmie has done nothing wrong.”

“You mean Miss Walker, don’t you, Your Highness?” Kate corrected him with a disapproving frown.

Dorian stopped. Kate had worked for his family for more years than Dorian could remember, and he knew his mother regarded her highly, but he would not tolerate this behavior from her. From anyone.

“Be careful Ms. Baker,” he warned. “Your job is much more on the line than hers right now.”

“The queen has given me strict instructions with regard to Miss Walker.”

“And you are here with me. Not the queen.”

Kate pursed her lips and pressed a hand to her neck, but nodded in understanding.

Dorian turned to face Emmie. Her face was flushed, and she looked horrified. This had turned into a hot mess, but he was tired of catering to everyone else’s whim and plan. He was a prince; he could make his own plans for once.

He grabbed Emmie’s hand. “Come with me.”

She blinked at him, her brow raised. “What?”

“Come with me,” he repeated, gently tugging her hand. “Let’s get out of here.”
