THE GREAT ESCAPE
âHeâs been in hospital for ages and now itâs time to get him out. Are you both with me on this?â Fin was adamant. He was worried because his usual stash of drugs hadnât been delivered and he wondered if there was some kind of suspicion surrounding himself and the others.
âYes, weâre both with you mate. There is going to be one hell of a drought, if weâre not earning. Do you think heâll pay us for all of our hard work?â Sitting in the corner of the pub, all three of them looked towards Chalky the landlord. Even he didnât seem himself. Normally he would shout insults towards Fin and they would banter, but not today. Something was seriously wrong.
âIâve asked Midge and Joe to lend us the mobile shop. I didnât tell them what for but said I needed a good cover and driving a mobile shop near a hospital isnât going to cause much suspicion. They think weâre burgling some houses somewhere and as long as they get a piece of the action they donât care.â
Beanie took a sip of his pint of lager and looked around to see if anyone was listening. âWhere are we going to take him, Fin?â
âIâve sorted that, but Iâll leave that until later.â Fin couldnât tell them, because he was still waiting for an answer. He knew he was taking a big chance, but for his own sake it was worth it and maybe if James felt grateful enough for all of their hard work they might earn something out of it. James already owed him five hundred quid, which is what heâd promised him to follow him to the warehouse. Fin could have cursed himself for not getting the money up front.
After they had all gone their separate ways Fin went back to his flat and waited for half an hour in case he was being watched. Then he left, popping a bag of sugar under his coat. Knocking on Maggieâs door, he waited.
âI wondered when youâd turn up.â Standing at the door, she wrapped her black cardigan around her tightly, then folded her arms.
âCan I come in Maggie?â Showing her the proper respect, he gave her a weak, helpless smile and after looking him up and down, she opened the door wider to let him in.
âHave you thought any more about what I said the other day? We all need your help. I need your help and after all, we are related.â Fin looked down at the floor. He knew this was a taboo subject never to be mentioned, but these were exceptional circumstances. She was his aunty Maggie. His mother, Maggieâs sister, had dumped him on his grandmother and disappeared into thin air. There was a lot of bad blood between the family and Maggie hadnât known about Fin for a long time. Maggie never mentioned her sister, and never acknowledged him as family, even though if he was really in trouble, she did her best to help him.
