CHAPTER FIVE

A WAY OUT

TODAY

Nicola burst into the third floor bedroom, startling James in the process, ‘Scared the crap out of me,’ he laughed.

‘There’s a cure,’ she said - unable to contain her excitement.

‘What?’

‘There’s a fucking cure!’ she repeated. She stopped a moment when she noticed the carnage sprayed and squashed around the room, ‘What the hell happened?’

James ignored her question and concentrated on her initial statement, ‘A cure? What are you talking about - a fucking cure? How? Who?’

‘There’s someone downstairs - in the lock-up… They were brought in late yesterday…’ Nicola stepped into the room and closed the bedroom door behind her. ‘One of them has a bite.’

‘And they haven’t turned? How is that possible?’

‘Because - as far as I can tell - it’s a living human bite. It’s not a bite from one of the undead.’ Nicola and James had seen enough bites in their time to know that the look is very different to the look of a bite from a living person. For one, when you’re bitten by the living - there is less puss. Much, much less puss. And the skin doesn’t turn black and angry around the wound. But - Frank had no medical knowledge whatsoever and didn’t know that it wouldn’t be possible for this to be a “cured” zombie bite and that’s the way Nicola wanted to keep it.

‘I don’t get it. You said there was a cure,’ James said.

‘And that’s what Frank thinks too,’ Nicola spoke in a quieter tone.

‘I’m sorry - I really don’t get it.’

‘I know you’re not happy here. I’ve seen the way you squirm when they bring someone new into their sick games. I feel the same. And if Frank thinks this person is a cure to everything - he’ll let them go but, because he’ll want to take the praise for getting them to wherever they need to get safely, he’ll send a small team up North with them. We’re the medics. We can be on that team but - first - you need to confirm what I say… That it looks as though the man is the cure.’

James was unhappy in the house but - unlike Nicola - he thought he was the only one who felt like this. Everyone else seemed content with what was going on. God knows enough people showed up to the Fight Clubs to show their support for what was happening; a brutal death match that took place, between kidnapped survivors, down in the basement on a weekly basis; the one that Gina was currently champion of. Then - of course - there was the number of people who frequented the girls on the third floor… It was no surprise James felt alone in his wish to escape the house and yet - in such a short space of time - he was one of three who wanted out and who was prepared to put everything on the line to get out.
