‘Thought he might be back here on a visit. When is he coming back on a visit?’ he asked Rosie, laughter in his voice. He dragged on his cigarette stub.

Tom swung a glance between them, sensing the electricity. He gave Rosie a wink, which she realised meant that he thought Conor attractive too.

‘He won’t be back for ages; he’s got too much sense to return here.’ Rosie’s sniping made Conor smile as he looked down, grinding out the cigarette butt beneath his foot.

The all clear sounded and Tom started brushing himself down with renewed vigour. ‘If we get going we’ll not be too late. Everybody else has probably been delayed, in any case.’

‘I’ll get dressed. It won’t take me long.’ Rosie noticed her colleague’s startled glance; Tom had obviously thought her fully clothed under the enveloping blanket. ‘I was getting ready when the siren went off,’ she blurted in explanation and started for the steps.

It took Rosie less than five minutes to put on her dress and shoes and drag a comb through her hair. Having finished colouring her mouth with crimson lipstick she stood back, surveying her reflection in the dressing-table mirror. Her silvery hair seemed waywardly wavy, but she’d no time to sleek it. Her complexion was still rosy from constant blushing; opening her compact, she toned it down with a few pats of powder, giving her nose a final dab. Picking up her handbag, she went downstairs to find Conor and Tom chatting in the hallway.

‘Suppose we’ll have to walk. Won’t get back to my car and the buses’ll be overflowing, if they’re running at all,’ Tom said.
