M Y BROTHER-IN-LAW HAS been going through the book for what feels like hours with no luck yet. In his defense, the book is fairly large and some of the writing he can’t read due to terrible penmanship.

Some of the things he’s read out loud makes the hair on my body stand at full attention because even I know the shit their family is into is darker than anything I’ve heard of before. The mention of animal and human sacrifice isn’t something people should be messing around with, so it’s clear they’re deep into this religion or whatever they perceive it as.

“It’s not a religion, bro.”

“What?”

“You said they were deep into this religion. It’s not actually a religion.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

He looks up from the book with his eyebrows together. “Oh.”

“What the fuck is going on?”

“I don’t know. It sounded like how we’re talking right now. Weird, I’ve never had that happen before while I wasn’t high.”

Makes sense as to why Javi is never sober, and I don’t blame him one bit now.

He goes back to the book and I feel a sense of dread building throughout my body. Something is about to happen and I can’t rely on paranoia like I used to when I got this feeling.

My phone rings, only furthering the dread to see the caller is unknown, but I answer anyway and hit speaker.

“Hello?”

“Monte. Why did you hang up on me?”

Javi looks at me with his mouth wide open, but motions for me to talk.

“Rosie, where are you, babe?”

“I told you. I’m right here.

A loud noise sounding like a fax machine comes through the speaker of the phone and Javi reaches over and hangs up.

“That wasn’t my sister, bro.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah. Are you good with going to church?”

“Why wouldn’t I be?”

“Something is all in you, bro. I don’t want you bursting into flames or anything.”

“Javi.”

“I’m serious. I think you are on your way to being possessed.”

“Why me?”

“Look what’s happening. It’s not happening to me.”

“Did you find anything yet?”

“Yeah, but it’s nothing you wanna hear, Monte. It’s all bad.”

“How the fuck is Rosie calling me?”

“It’s not Rosie. Kieran said she’s on a ventilator. Kinda hard to shoot the shit.”

“What if she’s not in the hospital at all? What if he lied?”

“You think? That’s your boy though.”

“I think they were fucking.”

“Oh. I don’t think that’s true, bro.”

“I know it is.”

“I’m sorry, Monte. This could be a good thing for you.”

“How? I lost my wife.”

“Yeah, but, you might not lose your life.”

“What’s the point of living if she’s not by my side?”

“You’re a good dude, Monte. My sister was lucky to have you. Look, I’ll take the book to the church and talk to a priest and you stay here and finish this bottle. I’ll bring more when I come back.”

“Okay. Thanks, Javi.”

“No sweat, bro.”
